Nine volumes, octavo, engraved frontispiece; early half blue straight-grained morocco and marbled boards, a handsome set. A handsome eighteenth century edition of the complete works of the poet and satirist Alexander Pope, containing the pivotal analysis An Essay on Man. Widely read and distributed across the Continent, the Essay elicited a response from Voltaire (La Loi Naturelle of 1756). However, not all criticism was positive, and Pope - a gentleman of sensitive disposition - was crushed by the demolition penned by Swiss professor Jean-Pierre de Crousaz. Not until his Works were first published in 1735 did Pope firmly claim authorship of the work, commenting "if I could flatter myself that this Essay has any merit, it is in steering betwixt the extremes of doctrines seemingly opposite, in passing over terms utterly unintelligible, and in forming a temperate yet not inconsistent, and a short yet not imperfect system of Ethics'. . Bindings rubbed, preliminaries browned and offset.

Leather. Zustand: Very Good. Unamed (illustrator). A nine volume set of works by the noted poet Alexander Pope. The work is bound in the desirable full calf binding, and a frontispiece to each volume. A lovely example of the works of Alexander Pope. In a contemporary calf binding to the time of publishing, with volume I rebacked with the boards preserved. Complete in 9 volumes. The works of the renowned poet, Alexander Pope. Pope was a extremely influential poet of the 18th century, with his most famous works including, 'The Rape of the Lock', 'An Essay on Man', as well as his translation of Homer's 'The Odyssey'. With the ink inscription of J. Houghton to the front end paper of each volume. Notably there is a slip tipped-into the front pastedown of volume I. It reads 'To George de Horne Vaizey, in memory of Mrs. Wood who died at the Hampton Hall. 28. March 1880. From F. E. Schulhof and M. F. Vaizey'. This appears to be the husband of the notes author Jessie Bell who wrote under the name Mrs George de Horne Vaizey. In a uniform full calf binding, volume I rebacked. Externally generally smart. Heavy rubbing to the head and tail of the spine, to the raised bands and extremities. Rubbing to the extremities, with patches of rubbing to the front and rear boards. Cracks to the front and rear joints of each volume, apart from volume I. Three volumes are lacking the original spine label, with partial loss to the spine labels of two volumes. The front and rear hinges of each volume are strained, with the rear board of volume 8 partially detached held by cords. Internally generally firmly bound, strained in places. The title page of volume III is detached but present, and heavily creased. Volume V has the previous owners pencil annotations to the front and rear endpapers. Small Tear to the front blank of volume V, towards the binding. No more than 3.5cm. Very Good. book.

Buch Erstausgabe
Hardcover. Zustand: Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. Nine volumes (complete). A lovely VERY RARE complete set of Pope's works published just a few years after his death. The books include the final edits and comments made by Pope on his deathbed. The books are fully bound in leather. The morroco spine has gilt decoration and titling. The books are serene and dignified. The covers of all the volumes have have wear from shelving and storage but this adds to their character rather than affecting the security or aspect. The spines are strong, genial, august. They have five ridges, six panels. The pages for all volumes have printer markings at the feet of the pages. Printing impressions are fresh. The contents throughout all of the books are in very, very good condition. They are bright and jejeune - startlingly, excitingly so considering their age. Volume 1: Juvenile Poems. The boards have wear to the faces and shelving nudging to the corners. They are firm and tight. Inside, the handpressed paper is firm and looks fresh. The font is clear. Volume 2: Translations and Imitations. Once again the boards are sturdy and sound. The edges and faces have some wear and scuffing. They are assured. Inside, the pages are thrillingly clean and pleasant. Volume 3: Moral Essays. The boards have some mild wear to the edges and corners. The faces have scuffing. They are healthy and hale. Inside, the frontis pages have some light storage marks. Once again, the pages are happily clear and comfortable. They are thick and tight. Volume 4: Satires, &c. The boards tidier than those preceding and succeeding. They are genial and benign with some surface shelving scuffing and wear. They are also healthy and wise. The pages are deliciously clean. Volume 5: The Dunciad in four books. The boards of this volume are much worn from storage. They are however, secure and experienced. The frontis and end papers have some light storage marks and wear. Inside, the engravings are lively, elegant, as if new. The pages are tight, clean, smart and full of energy. Volume 6: Miscellaneous Pieces in Verse and Prose. The boards are full of character and bear their wear with solemnity and dignity. Once again, inside, the pages are as if they are fresh from the printer. The pages are tight, clear, very certain. Volume 7: Being the First of his Letters. The boards mildly worn and scuffed from storage and shelving. They are solid and sure. Inside, the frontispages have very light storage marks. The paper has barely aged and is pleasingly firm. Volume 8: Being the Second of his Letters. The boards of this volume are noble and handsome. There is little wear and such as there be is surface. Inside, the pages are obliging in their generosity. Clean and clear and neat. Volume 9: Being the Third of his Letters. Also included is Pope's Last Will and Testament. The boards have smears of wear and scuffing. They are yet benign and competent. The pages are clean, certain, congenial and calm. This is a remarkable set of books principally due to the excellence, freshness and tidiness of the pages and paper. The books exude dignity and ownership, they evoke care of production and contentment of ownership. A generous set. fk. Our orders are shipped using tracked courier delivery services.
