Erstausgabe
FIRST COMPLETE EDITION. 170 x 106 mm. (6 3/4 x 4 1/4"). Edited by John Wright. 17 volumes. HANDSOME 19TH CENTURY PURPLE STRAIGHT-GRAIN MOROCCO, GILT, BY ZAEHNSDORF (ink-stamped on front free endpaper), covers with French fillet border, raised bands, spine compartments with inlaid green morocco oval at center, surrounded by gilt swirls, green morocco labels, turn-ins with plain and decorative gilt rules, top edges gilt. With two facsimiles of letters, one plate, and each volume with engraved frontispiece and engraved title page with vignette. Pastedown of each volume with bookplate of Peggy & Steve Fosset; volume I with pencil ownership signature of Ailsa Bruce dated 1927; most volumes with occasional light pencil markings by a former owner. â Light scattered foxing internally, the leaves with other trivial imperfections, but the text altogether very clean and beautifully preserved; some of the spines with scarcely noticeable fading, a few volumes with a couple of light scratches to covers and insignificant wear to extremities, but A VERY ATTRACTIVE SET with excellent shelf appeal. This is a fine, beautifully bound first edition of Byron's complete works, including his letters and journals, as well as the sympathetic biography written by his friend and literary executor Thomas Moore. DNB admires "the skill with which Moore constructed his portrait" and proclaims his biography "indispensable for students of Byron." (The memoir Byron had entrusted to Moore for publication after his death was determined to be too scandalous to see print and was burned in the presence of Lady Byron and others.) Day notes "the vigor and movement in Byron's letters, a compelling rhythmic prose that sweeps and punches. The man becomes blazingly alive in these incisive and driving letters." And of course, our set contains all of his ground-breaking poetry, the most famous in English after Shakespeare. As Day observed, "he gripped the soul of Western society as no other literary man ever has." John Murray paid £15,000 for the poet's copyrights, and Byron editions became a staple of the firm's output for a considerable number of years. Born in Pest, Hungary, Joseph Zaehnsdorf (1816-86) served his apprenticeship in Stuttgart, worked at a number of European locations as a journeyman, and then settled in London, where he was hired first by Westley and then by Mackenzie before opening his own workshop in 1842. His son and namesake took over the business at 33, when the senior Joseph died, and the firm flourished under the son's leadership, becoming a leading West End bindery. Over the years, Zaehnsdorf employed a considerable number of distinguished binders, including the Frenchman Louis Genth (who was chief finisher from 1859-84), and trained a number of others, including Roger de Coverly and Sarah Prideaux. A family-run business until 1947, the Zaehnsdorf bindery continued to produce consistently attractive, tasteful, and innovative designs executed with unfailing skill.

The complete works of Lord Byron. Small octavo, 17 volumes. Bound in three quarters morocco with gilt titles and elaborate gilt tooling to the spine. Engraved frontispiece and title-page in each volume by Finden. In excellent condition showing only light wear. A very attractive set. "Byron is to a far greater degree than the other romanticists the poet of humankind. He conveys with tremendous power the majesty and desolation of history, the vanity of pomp and pride, the transitoriness of fame. And he is the poet of contemporary society, keen to discern the false and the corrupt, courageous in denunciation yet with pity for the young and innocentâ ¦ As a poet he mirrored brilliantly and without distortion an absorbingly interesting world" (Baugh, 1229).

Full leather. Zustand: Very Good +. An impressive example of this original compilation of the works of Byron, complete in 17 volumes and bound --and signed-- in a full, mid to late 19th century red morocco by Root & Son of London. Each uniform volume has bright gilt-rule at the panels and 5 raised bands along each spine, with fine, decorative gilt-tooling at the compartments and offsetting leather title labels. All of the volumes are at least VG+ (or better) and only 1 or 2 show the lightest of wear along the spines and just a touch of staining at the panel edges. There's a bit of forgivable foxing at the endsheets but each volume is free of bookplates or writing or any other markings to the text. Each volume also includes a wonderful engraved title-page (all different engravings, each by E. Finden) which PRECEDES the printed title-page. 16mos, top-edges gilt, lovely marbled endpapers.

ROPER, William. The Life and Death of Sir Thomas Moore, Knt. Lord High-Chancellor of England, In the Reign of K. Henry the Viiith. Written by William Rooper, Esq; Prothonotary of the King's Bench: To Which is added from Sir Thomas's English Works some Letters of His, &c. referred to in the Account of his Life. London: Printed for Thomas Page and William Mount, 1728. Full Description: [MORE, Sir Thomas, Association]. ROPER, William. LEWIS, J., Editor. First Lewis/Roper edition. Roper first published this work in 1626 as 'The mirrour of vertue in worldly greatnes' (No copy of this title as auction sine 1965). In Dibdin's Biography of Sir Thomas More, he refers to the 1729 Roper/Lewis edition as being the first edition thus and calls it "rather scarce", our present copy is 1728. The 1729 copy Preface is signed by Lewis, whereas the 1728 edition is not. ESTC lists only one copy in the United States of this 1728 edition and we could find no other copies at auction. Octavo (8 1/2 x 5 inches; 217 x 127 mm). [2, blank], 184, [8, index and errata], [2, blank] pp. With a folding chart of Roper's family tree. Engraved head and tail pieces and initials. Contemporary full speckled calf. Boards ruled in gilt. Spine stamped in gilt. Red morocco spine label, lettered in gilt. Hinges and spine with repairs. Previous early ink signatures on front endpapers and a few matching early ink notations in the text. Overall a very good copy. William Roper is reputedly the earliest personal biography in the English language. He was also More's son-in-law having married his eldest and favorite daughter Margaret. "Roper's Life of More. is an attractive personal memoir, marked by candour, modesty, and strong loyalty. It is based explicitly on personal recollection, which, however, sometimes needs correction. Roper's portrait of More as a model lord chancellor has been modified in detail by later scholarship, and there is a serious anachronism in his last paragraph (fully discussed by R. W. Chambers in Harpsfield, 353-5) . But the book remains an English classic, the earliest personal biography in the language. It has also left its mark on all subsequent writing on More." (Oxford DNB). "The Mirrour of Vertue in Worldly Greatnes, or The Life of Sir Thomas More, Knight, sometime Lord Chancellor of England, was first imprinted in the year 1626, at Paris, according to the title-page, though it has been suggested, without any definite proof, that the book was not really printed abroad. The author of the Life, William Roper, Sir Thomas More's son-in-law, died in 1578; he had possibly not completed his book at the end of Queen Mary's reign. Before the Life appeared in print the manuscript version had already been utilised by various biographers of Sir Thomas More, notably by Stapleton, whose Tres Thomae appeared at Antwerp in 1588; by Nicholas Harpsfield, whose work is preserved in Harleian Manuscript and by Cresacre More, his great-grandson. Thomas Hearne, the famous antiquary, reprinted William Roper's book in the year 1716, but his text is almost as faulty as that of the editio princeps, though he had better manuscript materials at his disposal he added various readings and emendations at the end of his volume. In 1729 the Rev. John Lewis, the biographer of Wiclif and Caxton, edited the Life from a fairly good mauscript lent him by Mr. Thomas Beake, of Stourmouth, in Kent. " (Preface to the 1905 Edition). "It was Lewis who found William Roper's Life of Sir Thomas More in need of careful editing, for no one had attempted to refute the authenticity of the few pirated copies that were in existence, and the Hearn Manuscript of the Life was considered too illegible a document for any scholar's effort. Lewis.during his stay at Cambridge, found manuscripts other than Hearne's, and after careful comparisons, he was able in 1729 [this copy 1728] to bring out an edition of Roper's Life of More that has served all subsequent editors" (Longaker, English Biography p. 196).
