Broadside. Zustand: vg. 12 1/4x 9 1/4". Double-sided printed broadside. Bilingual appeal in English on one side, and Yiddish on the verso. This now incredibly scarce appeal to fight the Nazis was printed and issued by the Jewish People's Committee of Los Angeles, on behalf of the Vilna Jewish community. This powerful appeal originally came by way of the Moscow Jewish community, and was sent to them by the Vilna Rabbinical Council (Jewish Kehilla and Vahad Harabonim), upon the initial Nazi takeover of Vilna, on June 26th of 1941. However it was not until August 26th of that year that the appeal was relayed by Moscow to the world Jewish community. This came only five days before the instigating incident for the roundup of Vilna's Jews and the establishment of the ghetto by the Nazis. By September the 6th more than 20,000 Jews in the city had been murdered and those remaining had been rounded up and forced into the ghetto. The initial text discusses the background and history of the appeal, and is followed by the full original text. The text uses religious language and biblical and historical references to draw comparisons to the ongoing situation. Stalin is referred to as "our redeemer" and the Red Army as "our beloved liberators". Bellow this is printed a call to action containing a four-point plan to help in the fight against "Hitlerism", which includes gaining the support of local rabbis, the support of allied countries and American organizations, supporting President Roosevelt's aid to the allies, and contacting congressmen. The bottom of the text states that it is issued on behalf of the president of the organization Dr. Louis G. Reynolds. It would not be until December 11th 1941 that the U.S. would formally declare war against Nazi Germany. Copies of these appeals were likely printed on behalf of a number of major Jewish communities in cities around the United States, but the only other printing that currently can be confirmed to be extant is the one issued in New York office of the leftist newspaper the Daily Worker (only one library holding on OCLC). Text in English and Yiddish. Broadside with a few folding creases and a few minor stains, but the text is otherwise extremely clean and vibrant overall. In very good condition. An extremely scarce and powerful text. Protected in modern mylar. Yiddish title: × × ×£ ×¤× × × × × × ××¢× × ×¢×" ×"× × ×× × .
