xvi, 340, [4]pp. Preliminary ad., contents at end. Later panelled calf. Ownership inscr. of William Smith 1768 & James Palmer 1805, 'gave to him by William Smith'. ESTC T72012. Epistolary fiction. The text is 'far beyond that which I gave the Town some years ago' in 1692 & 1706. Based on Pallavicino's Il Corriero Svaligiato, and with a patronising missive to 'Little Sawney the Poet' which earned Gildon, 1665-1724, his place in the Dunciad. He attacked Pope & Swift in the British Mercury, 1711. Defoe & Gildon also exchanged pleasantries: Defoe described Gildon as a rake with six well-fed whores and a starving wife. Gildon wrote The Life & Strange Surprizing Adventures of Mr. D----- De F., of London in 1719 in which Crusoe & Friday make Defoe eat his big books as punishment for unfair depiction of his characters.
