Second (First Octavo) Edition. The greater portion of Bayley's work is given over to an account of the tower as a state prison, with biographical notices of the most distinguished personages confined there from the thirteenth to the early nineteenth century. Originally published in two quarto volumes, 1821-25. The appendix is omitted in this second edition, and some of the notes were abridged. Grose 2090.

A New Edition with material additions and improvements. 3 Parts in 2 Volumes. 4to. hardbacks in contemporary lozenge-diced half brown calf with raised bands, black title labels, decorative gilt to spines and marbled boards with gilt armorial crest (Caledonian United Services Club) to upper boards. All edges marbled. Volume I: iv, [2], 393pp, illustrated with 52 engraved plates, including engraved frontispiece and vignette to title page (lacking 2 listed but with an additional 2 plates not listed). Volume II: iii, [1], pp.1-240, illustrated with 25 engraved plates as called for, [4, including engraved frontispiece and vignette to title page], pp.241-367, plus 61 engraved plates, unpaginated, as called for. Previous owner's bookplate, ink name and date (1969) and red ink numerals to ffep of both volumes. Volume I also has remains of removed bookplate and label to front pastedown and ffep. Ffep of Volume II has vertical crease. Occasional light foxing and slight offsetting from engraved plates. Inner hinges of Volume I have been reinforced with linen tape. Spine of Volume I rather battered (please see photos) while Volume II is very good but with modern replacement title label. Old small label with handwritten ink number to lower board of Volume II.
