Although his fame tends to be eclipsed by that of his contemporaries such as William Wordsworth, Southey's verse enjoys enduring popularity. Born in Bristol, he was educated at Westminster School (from which he was expelled for writing a magazine article condemning flogging) and Balliol College, Oxford. (Of his time at Oxford, Southey was later to say "All I learnt was a little swimming (.) and a little boating") He published his first collection of poems in 1794, and continued publishing over 20 major works throughout his life. FIRST (SOLE) EDITION, 2 engraved frontispiece portraits (Nelson and Sidney Smith), 3 folding engraved plates (Nile, Trafalgar, Death of Nelson), short tear at lower margin of K3, tear with slight loss to fore-margin of E2 (of Sketch), occasional faint spotting, particularly to tissue guards, pp. [ii], 268, [vi], 45 [iii], 8vo, contemporary calf, spine with morocco label, edges rubbed, hinges splitting, good. A typical euology on British heroics in the colourful and often jingoistic language of the time. However, there is much useful information about various battles, including Trafalgar, and the Siege of Acre. The section concerning Nelson also includes extracts from his correspondence, as well as a detailed account of his funeral. WorldCat lists only 2 copies (National Maritime Museum and National Library of Ireland). (NMM 2, 915).
