Erstausgabe
Leather. Zustand: Fair. Various (illustrator). First edition. A scarce first edition four volume set of this work on Leo X. In four volumes as issued. Collated: Lacking frontispiece to volume II but otherwise complete. Including a dissertation on the character of Lucretia Borgia and decorative chapter headers. William Roscoe was an English historian and miscellaneous writer, also known as an early abolitionist and for his strong Presbyterianism. Leather. Zustand: Very Good. Not Stated (illustrator). The biographical account of Pope Leo X and his pontificate in six extensive volumes by William Roscoe. A second corrected edition complete in six volumes of William Roscoe"s biographical account of Pope Leo X. Born into the prominent political Italian family of Medici of Florence, he was the second son of Lorenzo de" Medici, and was elevated to the cardinalate in 1489. He was not only the head of the Christian Church, but also the temporal ruler of the Papal States and head of the Medici family that ruled the Florentine Republic. He is known for often resorting to the common practice of nepotism to exert his influence in Italy. Roscoe"s "Life of Leo the Tenth" first appeared in 1805. This is the second edition of 1806. William Roscoe, although best known for his poem for children "The Butterfly"s Ball and the Grasshopper"s Feast," was also respected as a historian and art collector in his time. In particular, this study of the life and pontificate of Leo X, together with his work on Lorenzo de" Medici are considered to be important contributions to historical literature. With a dissertation and an extensive appendix to volume V and VI. Bound in a half calf over marbled boards, complete with frontispiece and half-titles. Illustrated with a frontispiece to the first volume and the occasional engraving in text. In a half calf binding over marbled boards. Externally very smart with only minor shelf wear and a minor rubbing to the spine. With a minimal loss to the tail of the spine of volume one. The front joints of the first three volumes are starting with a slight cracking to the leather, but firm nonetheless. With Henry Arthur Lascelles" bookplate to the front pastedown of each volume. Each volume has a previous ownership signature to the title page. Internally, firmly bound. With some minor faint scattered spotting to the occasional leaf, particularly to the first and last although, generally, the pages are bright and clean throughout. Illustrated with a frontispiece to the first volume and the occasional engraving in text. Very Good. book.
