Erstausgabe
8vo, pp. [xx], 79; some corners defective from original paper flaws, but with no loss of text; a good copy in an early rough binding of sheep, rebacked much later (somewhat worn). First edition. This is one of the first works of the Scottish neo-Latin poet William Hogg, who was probably born in the early 1650s, and may have been educated at Edinburgh University. The text here consists of a Latin verse paraphrase of the book of Ecclesiastes (pp. 1-59), followed by a series of paraphrases of the Songs of Moses, which has its own title page. The printer is specified on the second title page as being John Richardson, but Hogg seems to have commissioned the book himself and no bookshop address is given: indeed, on the second title, the printing is specifically said to be 'impensis Authoris'. One might conclude from this that Hogg was independently wealthy, for surely very few books like this were published other than commercially, at this period. In fact, he seems not to have been at all rich, and was constantly in search of patronage. As D.K. Money remarks in new DNB, he 'succeeded in having many works printed, but his obscurity suggests that he was otherwise unsuccessful: the commercial viability of his work is also unclear'. Money also points out that Hogg was one of very few whig neo-Latin poets; however, 'he appears to have been decidedly and undeservedly ignored'. Hogg is reputed to have died in poverty, perhaps early in the next century, but little more is known about the facts of his existence than his verse productions. Wing H2364. Provenance. Early inscription on front free endpaper, heavily deleted; duplicate from Rochester Cathedral, with their inscription on title, and cancelled bookplate on pastedown.
