Cloth. Zustand: Good. Blue cloth with extensive gilt illustrations and ornamentation to the front cover and spine. Xxi, 431; ix, 383 pp. Illustrations throughout. A critical and biographical look at the life and work of William Blake, including printings of some of his poetry, along with reproductions of his drawings and art. Originally published in 1863, this was considered the first standard work on Blake. The first volume was mostly biography, with the second volume collecting Blake's poetry and other writings. Some of that work was the first time it appeared in typeset form. The work was mostly written by Alexander Gilchrist, although he died before it was completed, so the second volume was finished by Dante Gabriel Rosetti and Anne Gilchrist. This edition features additional material and revisions to the earlier material. GOOD condition. Uneven fading, toning, minor soiling and scuffing to the covers. Volume two bears some unfortunate small gouges to the center front and lower right front cover, resulting in minor loss of cloth and exposure of the boards beneath. Minor edgewear. Endpapers in both volumes rather foxed. Minor toning to the text block.

Cloth. Zustand: Good Only. William Blake (illustrator). First edition. A first edition of this important biography of poet William Blake, in the publisher's original decorative binding and complete in two volumes. The first volume comprises a biographical account of Blake, and the second compiles his poetry, prose, artwork and illustrated manuscript.William Blake (1757-1827) was an English poet, painter and artist who spent his lifetime in relative obscurity but since his death has been acclaimed and held as one of the most important figures in both British poetry and art. This work marked a turning point for Blake's reputation, as the Pre-Raphaelites became important in promoting his legacy.Written by Alexander Gilchrist (1828-1861), best known for this work and his biography of William Etty. Gilchrist spent years compiling material for this work and interviewing friends of the subject; however, he suddenly died and left it incomplete, and so his widow Anne finished it, aided by Dante Gabriel Rossetti and William Michael Rossetti.Complete in two volumes.Bound in the publisher's decorative cloth, with gilt detail to the covers.Illustrated with ten plates to volume I including the frontispiece; lacking the plate opposite page 230. Some wear to the head and tail of the spine as a result of bumping, as well as to extremities. Internally, generally firmly bound; both hinges is starting to volume I. Publisher's original highly gilt-decorated blue cloth bound by Burn & Co., with their binders-ticket to back pastedowns, edges uncut. Portrait frontispiece printed on india paper in each volume along with numerous illustrations throughout, including a number of prints from electrotypes made from the original copperplates of 'Songs of Innocence and Songs of Experience', and Blake's Virgil woodcuts. Cloth lightly rubbed at corners, half-titles browned, contents otherwise clean save for some very light occasional foxing mainly to margins and endpapers, cloth clean and bright, generally an excellent set. Gilchrist was Blake's first full-scale biographer and this work was first published in 1863. "Its effect was thunderous. Never has an important literary reputation been posthumously established so instantaneously and effectively" (Bentley). However it was unfinished when Gilchrist died. This is the first complete edition, finished by his wife Anne along with help from Dante Gabriel Rossetti (who wrote the final chapter from Gilchrist's notes), and his brother William Michael Rossetti. A.C. Swinburne also assisted; his own book on Blake was the fruit of his researches conducted while reviewing Gilchrist's book. Bentley, Blake Books, 1680B.
