See Jacob s entry, and Colenso s, in the Oxford DNB. 2pp, 12mo. In fair condition, lightly aged and worn. Folded twice. Addressed to The / Revd. R. Wilkins . The letter (clearly a circular addressed to members of the English Church Union) begins without salutation: If you could raise even a few pounds in your branch it would be a great help towards undoing the mischief which the defection of the Chief Pastor of teh Church in Natal has caused, & would be a great encouragement to the colonists in any future attempt to provide for the two [large?] neglected districts still unrepresented by the Church. Please accept this as my excuse for troubling you - / And / Believe me / faithfully yours / Edgar Jacob. In a postscript Jacob apologizes for being unable owing to press of work to write to you before leaving Oxford. He then gives a list of seven subscribers, headed by The Bishop of Oxford (a pound) and The Chancellor of the Exchequer (five guineas). Beneath this list, at the foot of the second page, is a list in what is probably Wilkins hand, of four individual contributions totaling £3 1s 6d, from the Exeter Branch E. C. U. &c &c .

See his entry in the Oxford DNB. The ALS, whose recipient is not identified, is appended on the last page of the printed notice, which is 4pp, foolscap 8vo, on a bifolium. In good condition, lightly aged. The notice is headed 'University of Oxford. / Directions for Candidates for Degrees in Music.' and signed in type at the end 'Frederick Arthur Gore Ouseley, / Professor of Music. / Oxford, / March, 1878.' Divided into sections concerning a bachelor's and doctor's degree. The ALS, on the last page, reads: 'Dear Sir / You will see by this paper that your Dublin B.A. will not help you at all at Oxford. But it would save you all preliminary examn. if you wished to graduate in Music at Dublin - a course which I should therefore recommend. I am / Your's faithfully / Frederick A Gore Ouseley'.

Despite Vaughan s final protestations, a fine analysis of the competing forces around the drive for reform of the Church of England. See his entry in the Oxford DNB. The present item is from the papers of the recipient, Wilfred Seymour De Winton (c.1856-1929) of Haverfordwest. 4pp, 12mo. On bifolium with mourning border. Signed C. J. Vaughan . Thirty-six lines of text. Begins Dear Mr. de Winton, / I am interested by your letter. You put forcibly the iniquity of the scheme, & I feel that applying it thus to one locality gives a much better idea of it to ignorant people than a more general description of its bearing upon the country at large. In Vaughan s opinion it is too late to introduce such a Church Reform as will pacify enemies, and must, in order to do so, alienate outrage friends . The four points raised by De Winton would be wormwood to the kind of Church people who live in these parts - and the last of them is Disestablishment at once . He continues forcibly: Those who are bent upon destruction will not give ear to reformation, and those who are keen for conservation will not surrender the very thing they are fighting for. His view, as De Winton will perceive, is that there is not much hope. If the present onslaught can be staved off, and I trust it yet will be, then the Church must indeed set itself to such self-mending as she can get her champions to consent to . He ends by apologising for a really inadequate answer .

See his entry in the Oxford DNB. The Church Army, still active today, was founded in 1882 as a Church of England equivalent to the Methodists Salvation Army. From the papers of the recipient Wilfred Seymour De Winton of Haverfordwest. 3pp, 12mo. On a bifolium of grey paper. In good condition, lightly aged. Signed W Carlile / Hon. Chief Sec. To the left of the signature, in the bottom-left of the recto of the second leaf, is a purple ink stamp of the following: WRITTEN BY ONE OF OUR POOR STRUGGLING LABOUR HOME BROTHERS . He begins what is undoubtedly one of many such letters he had to write: Dear Mr De Winton / The Vagrant, Criminal, and Inebriate Classes, a seething mass of our fellow men, look to us as the hand of the Church held out to give them a last chance. While many could get a fresh start in life after 2 or 3 months staying in one of our Labour Homes the lack of funds compels us day by day to refuse numbers of genuine helpable persons . He stresses that the homes are not Shelters and are limited to 25 Inmates, men women and youths all received irrespective of creed . He states that 51 1/2 per cent of those who passed through the institutions in the year 1895 obtained a fresh start , and that the organisation requires £100,000 annually . The financial burdens come heavily on us who nearly all work without any pay. He asks if De Winton can help them regain by labour & religion many rapidly sinking into the vortex of crime and misery. .
