contemporary cloth over board, title in gilt on morocco label on flat spine., Lessons for Children is a series of four age-adapted reading primers written by the prominent 18th-century British poet and essayist Anna Laetitia Barbauld. Published in 1778 and 1779, the books initiated a revolution in children's literature in the Anglo-American world. For the first time, the needs of the child reader were seriously considered: the typographically simple texts progress in difficulty as the child learns. In perhaps the first demonstration of experiential pedagogy in Anglo-American children's literature, Barbauld's books use a conversational style, which depicts a mother and her son discussing the natural world. Based on the educational theories of John Locke, Barbauld's books emphasise learning through the senses.Anna Laetitia Barbauld (/b??r?bo?ld/, by herself possibly /b??r?bo?/, as in French, née Aikin; 1743 ? 1825) was a prominent English poet, essayist, literary critic, editor, and author of children's literature. A "woman of letters" who published in multiple genres, Barbauld had a successful writing career at a time when women rarely were professional writers. She was a noted teacher at the Palgrave Academy and an innovative writer of works for children; her primers provided a model for pedagogy for more than a century. Her essays demonstrated that it was possible for a woman to be publicly engaged in politics, and other women authors such as Elizabeth Benger emulated her. Barbauld's literary career spanned numerous periods in British literary history: her work promoted the values of the Enlightenment and of sensibility, while her poetry made a founding contribution to the development of British Romanticism. Barbauld was also a literary critic. Her anthology of 18th-century novels helped to establish the canon as it is known today. , Size : 16vo, Volume : Vol.3 and 4 only. , Translated to French.

These volumes published in the same year as Barbauld's death, with a memoir by her niece. Barbauld is now remembered as an influential writer of the Romantic era. She was instrumental in influencing Samuel Taylor Coleridge's literary career until their falling-out. In her day Barbauld was praised for her writings for children, but she also published a literary anthology specifically edited for female readers. Barbauld could read Greek and Latin, and took an interest in literature, zoology, and poetry. Aikin, her niece, added dozens of poems to this collection of her works that were not previously published. An important anthology which includes an essay on women's rights. A bookplate on each front pastedown, one leaf missing a corner. Volume one lacks the frontispiece.

Hardback. Zustand: Good. None (illustrator). First edition. A very scarce first American edition of this important poem from Barbauld, offering a stark criticism of the involvement of Britain in the Napoleonic wars. The very scarce first American edition of this poem from English writer, essayist and poet Anna Laetitia Barbauld. Taken from the first English edition of the same year.Criticising Britain's participation in the Napoleonic Wars, the work was received negatively for its pessimistic view of the future, arguing that the influence of Great Britain was waning and the influence of the United States waxing. She believed that Britain's wealth and fame would go to America, leaving England an empty ruin. She tied this decline directly to Britain's participation in the Napoleonic Wars.Until the 2010s, this work was considered to have ended Barbauld's career due to the vicious reviews it garnered. However recent scholarship has reinstated its role in evincing a typical attitude of Romantic literature. With the bookplate and inscriptions of Peter Corne Dyckman, dated 1815. In the publisher's original paper covered boards, with paper label to front board. Significant losses to back strip. Bumping to board perimeters. Ink stain to front board and paper title label. Bookplate to front pastedown. Internally, binding lightly strained throughout and most tender to text block centre. Contemporary inscription to head of title page, and following page. Spotting throughout, with some foxing to final few leaves. Good. book.

In fair condition, aged and worn, with thin strip from mount adhering to the reverse of the second leaf, which is addressed, with two postmarks (one 'STOKE NEWINGTON') to 'Mr Spottiswoode | New Street | Shoe Lane'. Aikin's 'Universal Biography' had begun appearing in 1799, and the letter concerns the ninth volume, which was published in 1814. Aikin begins by stating that, according to his 'calculation', he either has by him, or soon will have, 'copy enough to finish the volume as soon as it can be printed, & I suppose Mr Johnston [William Johnston, one of the main contributors] will also be ready with his part [last eleven words underlined]'. It is Aikin's wish 'that this volume should be less bulky than the last, since otherwise there will be scarcely matter enough left for the tenth, even including an Appendix. I have written U & V & am beginning W but I should wish not to go through the last letter, or much to turn the 600th page.' From the distinguished autograph collection of the psychiatrist Richard Alfred Hunter (1923-1981), whose collection of 7000 works relating to psychiatry is now in Cambridge University Library. Hunter and his mother Ida Macalpine had a particular interest in the illness of King George III, and their book 'George III and the Mad Business' (1969) suggested the diagnosis of porphyria popularised by Alan Bennett in his play 'The Madness of George III'.
