ANSTEY, Christopher. THE NEW BATH GUIDE OR, MEMOIRS OF THE B-N-R-D FAMILY IN A SERIES OF POETIC EPISTLES. London: Vernor, Hood and Sharpe (et al), 1807. Early boards with a newer light-brown calf leather spine; 155 pages, with four-page publisher's catalog in rear. New edition, the first edition was published in 1766. This satirical poem in epistolary form is about the Blunderhead family in Bath and won praise for its humor. Tobias Smollett was influenced by this work in writing "The Expedition Of Humphry Clinker". The Anstey book consists of a series of letters in anapaestic verse, describing the adventures of the "Blunderhead Family" at Bath (a famous English spa) and depicting the manners of the place and time with humor and drollery. The ink name of Bath resident Caroline Hower, dated 1810, on the front pastedown and title page, dated August, 1810 (looks like fore-edge pages have been trimmed at some point & cut off some of the date on the title page). Good (some wear boards with new leather, some scattered foxing primarily to the plates; front & rear hinges reinfroced with brown, library-type cloth tape). $45.00.

Buch Erstausgabe
16mo. (17 x 10 cm). pp.vi+106. Uncut in original boards, sometime rebacked. Engraved title-page, 11 engraved plates including frontispiece (one with partial old coloured, another with a pencil tracing to verso) illustrated and engraved by F. Eginton. Contents a bit toned, generally a very good unsophisticated copy. The English poet Christopher Anstey (1724-1805) published his major work, The New Bath Guide, in 1766. Subtitled "Memoirs of the [Blunderhead] family, in a series of poetical epistles", it was composed at Trumpington and printed at Cambridge, the first quarto edition costing 5s. By the year's end five editions had appeared. Horace Walpole said that it described life in Bath with "so much wit, so much humour, fun, and poetry, so much originality, [as] never met together before". Walpole found the poem's mockery of Dryden, Handel, Methodism, and picturesque clichés compelling (Walpole, Corr., letter to Montagu, 20 June 1766). While later denigrating Anstey, Walpole never lowered his view of the poem (Walpole, Memoirs, 3.11920). Gray was as positive, writing to Wharton on 26 August 1766: "Have you read the 'New Bath Guide'? It is the only thing in fashion, and is a new and original kind of humour". The Critical Review, the Gentleman's Magazine, and the Monthly Review all praised it. The Guide was much imitated in the next fifty years, itself having forty editions. It was illustrated by Rowlandson, Eglinton, and Cruikshank.

Brochure/Pamphlet. Zustand: Fair. None (illustrator). A very scarce work of poetry by Christopher Anstey. Dating from the late eighteenth century this satirical work is written in a Somerset dialect. Very scarce. Disbound, with the original sewn binding failing. ESTC Citation number T32474. Collated complete (44pp, ESTC). Written by the Author of the New Bath Guide, Christopher Anstey. This very scarce work of satire, parodies the work of Horace Worpole, presenting the society of the city of Bath in the 18th century. Written in a somerset dialect. The poetry featured in this volume are titled 'The First Ode of the First Book of Horace Imitated'; 'An Election Ball In Poetical Letters In The Zomerzetshire Dialect, From Mr. Inkle, A Freeman of Bath To His Wife at Glocester' comprised of two letters. These letters are titled 'Letter I. Mr. Inkle to his Wife Mrs. Dinah Inkle, At Glocester. Containing Female Accomplishments- Preparations for the Ball- Absurdity of the former Ages in Point of Dress and Manners' and 'Letter II. Mr. Inkle to Mrs. Dinah Inkle, At Glocester: Consisting of Similes- Easy Postures of modern fine Ladies---- Well-bred Speeched----High Life at the Ball---- And a doleful Disaster.' It is believed that Anstey got the inspiration for these letters from attending the Batheaston Literary Circle. Indeed Anstley was heavily influenced by the city of Bath and its society, largely built around from the believed medicinal quality of the waters. In a paper wrap. Externally worn. Heavy bumping to the head and tail of the spine, and extremities, resulting in numerous tears to the front and rear boards. Heavy loss to the head extremities of the pamphlet, appears to have been torn away. Heavy handling marks to the front and rear boards, with light creases. Internally binding is failing in places, with several pages loosening throughout. Page are bright and generally clean with scattered spots, and light age toning to the extremities of several pages. Fair. book.
