Hardcover. Zustand: f to vg. Second edition. Small octavo (7 1/4 x 4 1/2"). [14]pp. 319, [1]pp. Original full calf. Raised bands. Engraved frontispiece portrait of Isaac Barrow by D. Loggan. Decorative headpieces. A collection of twelve sermons preached upon several occasions by the celebrated English Christian theologian and mathematician Isaac Barrow (1630-1677). In his sermons, considered by many as masterpieces of argumentative eloquence, Barrow avoids controversy and preaches morals. However, he was also a controversial writer of great weight, and that chiefly against the papacy, whose followers, according to his biographer, Abraham Hill, he had seen England militant, Italy triumphant, France diguised. Binding darkened and heavily rubbed along upper margin, with some abrasion to leather. Head and tail of spine chipped. Previous owner's name dated Nov. 26, 1809 on front free endpaper. Hinges starting. Minor and sporadic foxing to very first and very last leaves. Binding in overall fair, interior in good+ to very good condition.

Erstausgabe
Hardback. Zustand: Very Good. First Edition. Hardback. Large 8vo. pp [8] 428 with separately paginated 49 pp section at rear of 'A Discourse Concerning the Unity of the Church.' Intro by J Tillotson, dedication page is from the author's father Thomas Barrow to the RT Ho Heneage Lord Finch Baron of Daventry ( Lord High Chancellor.) Old ownership signature of one Thomas Alston with notes on front blank in a late 17th century hand about other works by 'Dr Barrow.' Neat later ownership signature of one Thomas Moody. An intricately argued work of scholarship, history and theology with citations from earlier works many in Greek and Latin.Isaac Barrow (October 1630Ð1677) was an English Christian theologian and mathematician who is generally given credit for his early role in the development of infinitesimal calculus; in particular, for the discovery of the fundamental theorem of calculus. On the Restoration in 1660, he was ordained and appointed to the Regius Professorship of Greek at Cambridge. In 1662 he was made professor of geometry at Gresham College, and in 1663 was selected as the first occupier of the Lucasian chair at Cambridge. During his tenure of this chair he published two mathematical works of great learning and elegance, the first on geometry and the second on optics. In 1669 he resigned his professorship in favour of Isaac Newton.[11] About this time, Barrow composed his Expositions of the Creed, The Lord's Prayer, Decalogue, and Sacraments. For the remainder of his life he devoted himself to the study of divinity. He was made a D.D. by Royal mandate in 1670, and two years later Master of Trinity College (1672), where he founded the library, and held the post until his death. Besides the works above mentioned, he wrote other important treatises on mathematics, but in literature his place is chiefly supported by his sermons, which are masterpieces of argumentative eloquence, while his Treatise on the Pope's Supremacy is regarded as one of the most perfect specimens of controversy in existence. Barrow's character as a man was in all respects worthy of his great talents, though he had a strong vein of eccentricity. He died unmarried in London at the early age of 46, and was buried at Westminster Abbey. John Aubrey, in the Brief Lives, attributes his death to an opium addiction acquired during his residence in Turkey. Full contemporary brown calf, unlettered at spine with neat later inked title on paper. Very good indeed with clean text.
