Previous owner's inscription to preface 'The Fourth edition of this book (1867) was published under the name Edmund Beckett Denison (same man). The author s own architectural work on St. Alban s Cathedral inspired the verb to grimthorpe , meaning to carry out unsympathetic restorations of ancient buildings. Beckett is also notable for having designed in 1851 the mechanism for the clock of the Palace of Westminster, responsible for the chimes of Big Ben.
