Two volumes bound in one, 8vo, pp. xxiii, [i], 191; viii, 192; in contemporary calf, joints very fragile and covers almost detached. Second edition: first published in 1796 in two much grander volumes quite a number of verses are omitted in this edition, notably all the neo-Latin poems. Samuel Bishop (1731-95) was educated at Merchant Taylors' School, and after taking a degree at Oxford, and ordination, returned to his old school as a teacher. By 1783 he had risen to the position of headmaster, where he had mixed success in controlling boys and teachers (he had to abolish flogging after his undermaster, John Rose, took things too far), but was regarded with affection by many. Scarce: ESTC locates five copies in the UK (BL, Canterbury, Liverpool and two at Oxford); four in the US (Folger, Library Co, UTS and Texas); and two at Otago in New Zealand. Roger Lonsdale, who once owned this copy, chose two epigrams from this collection for the New Oxford Book of Eighteenth-Century Verse.

Erstausgabe
Two volumes, 4to, engraved portrait frontispiece and pp. [xxviii], [ix]-xlv, [i], 335; xvii, [i], 387, [1] errata and advertisement; a good clean copy in contemporary tree calf, with gilt spines (spines worn and missing labels, joints cracked but holding); marbled endpapers, yellow edges. First edition. This collection of his poems was compiled by Thomas Clare, and published by subscription: the list of those who put their names down for copies includes a few distinguished names, such as Beilby Porteus (Bishop of London) and Shute Barrington (Bishop of Durham), as well as numerous fellows of St John's Oxford (where Bishop had also been a fellow), and the current Headmaster of Merchant Taylors', Thomas Cherry. At the end of the first volume are about 25pp of Latin poetry; and on I pp. 95-98 is a poem titled 'The Game of Cricket', which describes the game in colourfully 'poetic' language, and seems to want to draw a parallel between the game and the boys' future lives: Yet vain it's speed, yet vain the Bowler's aim, The wary Bat's-man watches o'er the Game; Before his stroke the leathern circle flies, Now wheels oblique, now mounting threats the skies. Emblem of many-colour'd Life! The state, By Cricket laws, discriminates the great: The Outer Side, who power and profits want, Watch to surprise, and labour to supplant; While those, who taste the sweets of present winnings, Contend as heartily, to keep their Innings. (pp. 96-97).

Hardcover. First Edition. Preface by Allen Tate. Elizabeth Bishop's copy SIGNED by her on the front endpaper. In a letter to Robert Lowell dated 27 June 1950 Bishop writes of THIS book: "I spent most of the weekend reading Samuel Greenberg--have you? I got so mad at the introductions, particularly Tate's--and if you haven't read the poems I recommend them highly. He was certainly one of the finest poetic characters I know anything about, and phrases are magnificent--and no critic has ever apparently appreciated either at their real value" (ONE ART: ELIZABETH BISHOP'S LETTERS, p. 204). In another letter to Robert Lowell dated August 1950, Bishop writes: "I'm reading The 'Green Huntsman' and it's marvelous--also just finished Samuel Greenberg and Isaac Rosenberg who have many strange points in common" (WORDS IN AIR: THE COMPLETE CORRESPONDENCE OF ELIZABETH BISHOP AND ROBERT LOWELL). Clearly even two months later this book was still in the forefront of Bishop's mind. While we have handled several copies of Bishop's books signed by her as well as correspondence, this is the first book from the poet's library that we have encountered. It appears, also, to be a book that had some influence on Bishop's development as a poet. Greenberg was also a huge influence on the poet Hart Crane, who first read Greenberg in manuscript. Crane was so taken by Greenberg, he lifted entire lines for his own poems. The cloth was damaged by water at some point with the result that it is discolored. There is only slight water damage to the dustwrapper. Still Very Good in a Very Good dustwrapper.
