Premiere edition francaise (?). - Contenu: 12 lettres et 3 appendices, concernant son voyage d Islande et autre Scandinavie (1859). Sheet. Zustand: Fine. Autograph letter signed "Ava", small octavo, from Canadian Governor-General Lord Dufferin on the Stationery of His Irish Residence. Frederick Temple-Hamilton-Blackwood, 1st Marquess of Dufferin and Ava (1826-1902), distinguish British diplomat. In 1846-1848 he was active in relieving the distress of Ireland due to the famine. He held several cabinet posts before being created Earl of Dufferin in 1871. In 1872, he was apointed Governor-General of Canada, an office he held until 1878. He was extremely popular with the Canadian people. In 1884 he was appointed Viceroy of India, and again served with great success. His last years were mainly spent in his Irish home, Clandeboye. In his billet to Mr Woodside, he invites him toa dinner at the Club House of his residence. Signed by Author. Manuscrit.

Freundschaftliche Korrespondenz mit Madame Todesco und Prinzessin Batthyany: "[.] We are now steaming down the Red Sea , and it is so cold that I was obliged to wear a thick overcoat at the breakfast table. Every day they promise me a little warmth and every day the climate becomes more arctic in its severity [.]" (a. d. Br. v. 28. XI. 1884). - Der britische Diplomat war von 1872 bis 1878 Generalgouverneur von Kanada und folgte i. J. 1884 George Robinson, 1. Marquess of Ripon, als Vizekönig von Indien. "Während der Amtszeit des Earls wurde die British Indian Army modernisiert. Schwerpunkt seiner Amtszeit waren aber außerpolitische Konflikte mit Rußland um die Vorherrschaft in Zentralasien im Rahmen des Great Game. Dufferin gelang es auch hier, militärische Konflikte durch Verhandlungen zu vermeiden" (Wikipedia). Nach dem Ende seiner Amtszeit war Blackwood als britischer Botschafter in Rom und Paris tätig, 1888 wurde er zum Marquess of Dufferin and Ava erhoben.

Mildly rubbed at extremities, with some fading and flaking to cloth at crown of spine; 20th-c. private ownership stamp to endpapers and a few page margins; overall a tight, Good or better copy. Given Worthington's history of piracies, this is likely an unauthorized American printing from the third British edition. Of a higher quality than many of Worthington's titles, however, and a not unattractive copy.
