12mo with plan and 3 engravings of public buildings, and 6 advertising pages. 3/4 morocco with marbled boards, gilt spine with title. Some pencil notations and toning. Map re-enforced along original folds and other repairs. Re-bind stamps from Tikeman & Co. One of New York's earliest guide books. Includes three engravings by Hooker, including the Prison, the Almshouse, and City Hall. The rare map of lower Manhattan, "Plan of the City of New York" describes the Battery to 29th street, was also engraved by Hooker, and identifies ninety-eight points of interest. William Hooker (1782-1856) had worked for Blunt when Blunt was located in Newberryport, Mass., and eventually returned to New York City in 1815 to assist in the production of this work and produce the city plan for it, which would be the basis for a series of pocket plans and maps of New York by Hooker.

Erstausgabe
First edition. First edition. [iv], 196, [20, ads] pp. 1 vols. Narrow agenda 8vo. A choice copy of the uncommon first edition of this standard American manual, by the important New York publisher of The American Coast Pilot, Bowditch's Practical Navigator, and many other sea manuals. Blunt's advertisement to the Expeditious Measurer explicitly states the reason for the new title, noting the many (and potentially costly) errors in the Merchant's and Ship-Captain's Ready Calculator (1816) "all which have been corrected in this edition." Blunt's work went through many editions during the antebellum period. Interestingly, Blunt's book ends with a discussion of calculating volumes of casks of wine and beer. American Imprints 19773 Contemporary mottled sheep, red spine label. Minor wear at extremities, a fresh and attractive copy. Very good [iv], 196, [20, ads] pp. 1 vols. Narrow agenda 8vo.

Handwritten notations on front and rear endpapers and pages 187 and 422. Notation on front free endpaper: "Oren Crowell / His Book / Bought / In Boston / Sept 20th 1833 / Price $3.50 cts cash." A unique piece of seafaring Americana. Full title: The American Coast Pilot: Containing Directions for the Principal Harbours, Capes, and Headlands, on the Coast of North and South America: Describing the Soundings, Bearings of the Lighthouses and Beacons from the Rocks, Shoals, Ledges, &c. with the Prevailing Winds, Setting of the Currents, &c. and the Latitudes and Longitudes of the Principal Harbours and Capes; Together with a Tide Table. Oren Crowell was born in Yarmouth, Massachusetts in 1808 and eventually lived in Hyannis. By the 1830s, Crowell was a sea captain sailing out of the port of Boston, often aboard packet ships traveling to Baltimore or New York. Advertisements in the Boston newspapers show him commanding the brig Mary Stanton and the schooners China, Splendid and Lewis. Around 1856, Capt. Crowell moved to New Orleans and became a ship chandler in partnership with Elijah Taylor under the firm name of Crowell & Taylor. About a year later, Crowell & Taylor became Crowell & Hallett, with Jacob P. Hallett becoming Capt. Crowell's business partner. On July 13, 1858, Capt. Oren Crowell unexpectedly died of yellow fever. He is buried in Oak Grove Cemetery in Hyannis, Barnstable, Massachusetts.
