12mo, 15.7cm, in 2 volumes, xvi,[1],187 & [1],193,[iii]pp., (ads)., Wanting 2 of the 4 plates), 2 engraved plates (Palates 1 and 3 are present) with 2 half-titles, in contemporary boards, spine caps wanting, boards loose, internally clean and sound, as is (tr). Howes B-626)aa). Bossu arrived in New Orleans a few years after its founding, and only eighty years after La Salle came down the Mississippi. This collection of letters, revealing many vivid personal and secondhand recollections, give a fascinating portrait of life and travels in that vast area. The letters contain, among other descriptions, historical sketches of the Indian tribes in what is now the southern U.S. and the interior regions as far north as the Missouri River and Illinois. For comments, too critical of the ministry, Bossu was imprisoned and his book banned for awhile in France.

2 volumes in 1. 12mo. 16.5x10 cm (6.5x4"). xx, 244; [iv], 264 pp. Illustrated with 4 copper-engraved plates (including 2 engr. frontispieces). Original period full mottled calf, spine tooled in gilt, black morocco lettering label, marbled endpapers, edges marbled; extremities worn. Faint signature (erased) of B.F. Gibson, 1921/4. Very good. Second edition (same year as first) of this important work on the exploration of the interior parts of North America, consisting of a series of twenty-two letters by Bossu, a French army officer, relating his life and travels from 1751 to 1762 in the Louisiana territory to as far north as Fort Chartres in what is now Illinois to as far east as the French post at Mobile [Alabama]. / Streeter notes that "Bossu wrote well and his letters not only give an interesting picture of life and travels in the Mississippi Valley and the Mobile country to the east at the beginning of the second half of the eighteenth century, but incorporated also are many sketches of events of the preceding years. Bossu came to New Orleans only thirty-three years or so after its founding and only eighty years after La Salle's journey down the Mississippi, and the first and second hand recollections were still fresh." âÂÂ" Streeter III:1518. / "For comments, too critical of the ministry, Bossu was imprisoned and his book banned for a while in France; this probably accounts for the scarcity of the first edition, of which Sabin found no record." âÂÂ" Howes. / "In 1750 Bossu was a member of military reinforcements being send to New Orleans, the capital of the French colony Louisiana. Bossu's convoy left France on 1750-12-26 and travelled first to Cap-Francois in Saint-Domingue, where it arrived mid-February. After a short stay the convoy left for New Orleans on 1751-3-8 finally arriving in early April. Soon after his arrival in New Orleans Bossu set out to explore the Mississippi River and neighbouring areas. First he travelled to the Natchez and later to the Quapaw, who made him a member of their tribe. Later he explored the lower parts of the Arkansas River and followed the Mississippi River into Illinois. in 1757 Bossu returned to France to report on the state of the French colony and was ordered back to New Orleans the same year. Louis Billouart the governor of Louisiana sent him from New Orleans to Fort Toulouse at the eastern border of the colony. In 1759 he was assigned to lead a convoy to Fort Tombeche (now Sumter County, Alabama), where the Choctaw were living. He returned to New Orleans the same year, and little is known what he did until early January in 1763 when he returned to France. Back in France he had to spend six weeks in prison for having criticized Louis Billouart for assigning the command of the convoy to Fort Toulouse to less experienced officer." [Wikip.]. / Some added notes: The letters of Bossu contain early descriptions of America, the cruelties of the Spaniards, mining work, the true origin of Naples disease, a description of Fort Havana, the Gulf of Mexico, an early description of the Mississippi River, coming to Arkansas, Illinois, a caravan of elephants arriving near the Oyo [Ohio] River. In letter 15 he describes a manner of punishment for adultery. How the dead are buried and mourned in Alabama. Letter 17 recounts an escape from a crocodile in Alabama. And throughout his travels, returns to Europe and conflicts he encounters. REFERENCES: Howes B626; Clark, Old South II:5; Field 156; Graff 361; Sabin 6465 (locating no record of the first issue).

BOOKPLATE OF JOHN BIGELOW (Tolle, lege, redde - Leviticus 6:4. Suum cuique - Psalms 37:21) Very good. JOHN BIGELOW'S COPY OF THE FIRST EDITION (a second issue has a title-page dated 1778). "This is the account of Bossu's third voyage to Louisiana country made early in 1770 [-1771]. He revisited his old friends, the Arkansas Indians, and on their behalf made a mission to the Caddos [Red River area] and Attakapas [Atakapa tribe of Louisiana], and then returned to France in 1771. Most of the letters are dated from the Arkansas post." - Streeter. / He writes of New Orleans, of the death by Mr. Denoyer, his supplies 'stolen' by a crocodile, chasing wild bulls, exporting grains to France, some plants described, manners in Arkansas, he recounts numerous experiences with local tribes he befriended: the Allibamonne [Alabama], the Cadodaquio [Kadohadacho tribe, nr. Red River], the Natchitoche [of Louisiana], the Cenis [part of the Caddo], a man being eaten by a tiger (7th letter), superstition of the Indians of the region, a mad dog with rabies, how to avoid being eaten by crocodiles, life in Cuba, a visit to Saint Dominque island, sale of slaves (9th letter) âÂÂ" an act that is inhuman, a tale of the metamorphosis of an insect called 'Mahacat' ('palmetto bug' âÂÂ" or cockroach). / Bossu, a French marine officer, contributed another work, his, Nouveaux voyages aux Indes Occidentales, 1768, which describes his earlier visits to America between 1751-1762. He visited Louisiana, Mississippi and Arkansas, even reaching Illinois. Bossu was, in fact, prisoned for his views written in the earlier account, yet the book was very popular. In the present work, arranged in 9 letters addressed to the author's friend, M. Douin de la Motte, Chevallier and Captain of the French king's army, he is visiting the Louisiana Territory forming his third trip to the Americas. / The bibliographers Obadiah Rich and Thomas W. Field both describe this work of Bossu from 1777 work as scarce. The imprint of Amsterdam is false and was a veiled attempt to bring any problems to the actual publishers. PROVENANCE: John Bigelow (1817-1911), was an American lawyer, statesman, and historian who edited the complete works of Benjamin Franklin and the first autobiography of Franklin taken from Franklin's previously lost original manuscript. He played a central role in the founding of the New York Public Library in 1895. REFERENCES: Clark, Thomas, Travels in the Old South, II:5; Cohen, 178; Graff, Catalogue of The Everett D.
