Zustand: Fair. 1926. Limited copy. 260 pages. No dust jacket. Paper covered boards with brown cloth spine. Limited to 1000 copies of which this is No.80. Pages and binding are presentable with no major defects. Minor issues present such as mild cracking, inscriptions, inserts, light foxing, tanning and thumb marking. Overall a good condition item. Boards have mild shelf wear with light rubbing and corner bumping. Some light marking and sunning. Gilt lettering is darkened.

Stanislas Boufflers, scrittore francese (Nancy 1738 - Parigi 1815), più conosciuto sotto il nome di chevalier de Boufflers, eletto all'Accademia francese nel 1788, fu celebre per il suo licenzioso racconto La Reine de Golconde, fonte d'ispirazione del libretto d'opera di Donizetti. In quest'edizione vengono raccolte, oltre al sopracitato racconto, anche le sue lettere. Si segnala tra l'altro il curioso racconto: "L'oculiste dupe de son art".

Boufflers avait été, quelques mois auparavant, à l'origine du décret fondateur du droit de propriété industrielle. (Cf. Coquelin & G., I, 213 et s. et J. Godechot, 'Les institutions de la France.', p. 219 et s. Martin & Walter, 4524). Quelques rousseurs. Bon exemplaire.
Paris, Charles Pougens, an IX - 1800. In-8, broché, couverture papier ancien fort, viij, 71 p., (1) f. d'errata. "Deuxième édition, corrigée et augmentée". "Boufflers entreprend de justifier l'inégalité sociale, principe fondamental de la société aristocratique en laquelle il croyait toujours, en la présentant comme une condition nécessaire pour assurer un courant de sympathie entre les hommes" (Nicole Vaget-Grangeat, 'Le Chevalier de Boufflers et son temps', Nizet, 1976). Poète d'origine lorraine, collaborateur de l'Encyclopédie, le chevalier de Boufflers fut élu à l'Académie française en 1788. Député de la noblesse aux États généraux de 1789, il émigra après le 10 août 1792 et trouva refuge en Prusse polonaise où il épousa Éléonore de Sabran. Renté en France après le 18 brumaire, il se rallia à Bonaparte. Peut-être plus au goût du jour, cet essai n'a pas été repris dans l'édition collective des oeuvres de l'auteur. (France littéraire, I, 445). Bon exemplaire, frais, grand de marges, entièrement non rogné.
