Second edition (going by the date on the one title page), publication commenced in 1834 and ended in 1838. This volume is the complete first series of fascicules. Heinrich Heine and Breza were close friends for many years. Besides Heine, includes portraits of Moses Mendelssohn, Spinoza, and Rahel von Varnhagen, among others. Compiled in Paris, where Breza lived after the failure of the Polish insurrection of 1830-1831. The two historical plates are of Moses with the Tablets of the Law and Rehoboam, first King of Judea, as portrayed in an Egyptian stela.
