Erstausgabe
Zustand: Very Good. . Pelican Philosophy Series, 1st edn, 1953. 224pp paperback in very fine condition, almost imperceptible edge-darkening. John Stuart Mill was born into a powerful philosophical movement deriving from the eighteenth century and dominated by Bentham. Mill devoted his life to the study of philosophy, politics, and economics, and to the cause of socialism and the working class. But he also opened his mind to quite new influences: the historical, romantic, and religious influences which became dominant in the middle of the nineteenth century. His own philosophy presents Benthamism in a form so modified and accommodated as to allow it to be effective in the new age. The particular character of naturalistic and empirical thought in the later Victorian era derives very largely from Mill's writings and personal influence. This book opens with a biography of Mill which shows how the 'many-sidedness' which he admired in Goethe was to a high degree achieved in his own life. In the succeeding chapters an attempt is made to show how Mill worked out and transformed the Utilitarian heritage in the fields of ethics, politics, logic, and metaphysics: in all of which (and especially in logic) Mill made contributions of permanent importance.4.25x7in. . . . .

Zustand: Very Good. 1955. Paperback. 'When the first Pelicans were published the intention behind them was to provide the serious general reader with authoritative books on a wide range of intellectual interests. There was at the time no deliberate design of building a library of modern knowledge at a modest cost. Nevertheless, Pelicans have, in fact, become such a library: and one serving, moreover, not only the general reader of serious purpose, but also the great body of students pursuing courses in the Universities and institutions of higher education generally.' (The Penguin Story, 1956). A Pelican Book. Vintage Paperback. . . . .
