Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. A remarkable color illuminated album presented to Harold Browne, Bishop of Winchester, by members of his Diocese in honor of the 50th anniversary of his wedding in 1890. Large quarto. Bound dark brown morocco with elaborate gilt stamped and blind embossed boards, metal ecclesiastical coat of arms mounted on the front board, silver silk floral endpapers signed in gold on front silk pastedown: "Blackwell, Market Place, Reading". The album contains 12 hand written and hand painted color plates mounted in boards. The first three plates include detailed wash drawings inset as vignettes at the center of the bottom illuminated border. A few small light scrapes to the corners and spine ends, modest toning and foxing to the silk free endpapers (on the blank paper sides), very good or better with modest offsetting on the blank versos of the mounts from the facing illuminated plate. A handsome, meticulously hand-crafted presentation manuscript.

Manuskript / Papierantiquität
7pp., 12mo. In India Office envelope, addressed by Frere to 'The Rt. Revd. | The Lord Bishop of Winchester | 17 Devonshire Place | W.' In good condition, on lightly-aged paper. In the event that he is unable to attend the meeting ('as I have an engagt. for 3 o'clock at Marlborough House') he asks the Bishop to 'mention - if you think proper - how entirely I agree with the view taken by Mr. Jacob & that I think £2,000 to each Bishopric is the least wh. S.P.G. shd. offer.' In Frere's view 'the meeting will have the power of deciding whether efficient episcopal supervision shall be provided for those two great Provinces, the Punjab & Burmah; or whether this shall be indefinitely postponed.' He explains regarding a plan on the matter put forward twenty years before by the Bishop of Exeter: 'The great Mutiny occurred & all action was postponed for 20 yrs.' The letter proceeds with a discussion of 'the kind of Bishop Ld. Salisbury proposes', with Frere dividing his analysis into four lettered sections, with the first (and shortest) reading: '(a) the exact kind of Bishop wh. Bishops Cotton & Milman contemplated'. Frere considers 'that what is described as a Miss[onar]y. Bishop must be more or less a class Bishop or a caste Bishop'. He concludes in the hope that 'S. P. G. will be true to its own old lines of principle & action & not, in hunting after vain shadows lose the substantial advantage of the creation of two manageable sees'.
