12mo, engraved frontispiece and pp. 88; disbound. Early stamped ownership at head of title 'H.M. Evans'. A scarce edition. ESTC records only the following copies: BL, Berlin State Library; Case Western, Folger, Rice and University of Rochester. This is quite different from another 'twelfth' edition published the same year (with 92pp), with the name of Feales (as it is more properly spelt) and the Wellington family in the imprint. I doubt if this present edition is a piracy, because Feales's address is specified in the imprint, but it could be.

Erstausgabe
12mo in sixes, pp. iv, 167, [1] epilogue; with fly titles to each of the three parts; contemporary panelled calf, a bit rubbed, but attractive, and sound. First edition thus: Buckingham's two plays were written in the 1670s and 1680s (the latter an adaptation of John Fletcher), but enjoyed a long shelf-life, even though The Rehearsal was a topical satire. The copyrights had come into the hands of Richard Wellington by 1701, but he died intestate in 1715, and the business was carried on by his widow, Mary. (She remarried, to John Poulson, in 1720 but died in 1726.) This edition must have been, at least in part, intended to re-establish her rights to these plays. It is quite scarce, with three copies located in the UK (BL and two in Oxford), and eight in the US (three of them at the Clark). Provenance. Early inscription 'J: Fullerton' on upper pastedown.

Cloth. Zustand: Very Good Indeed. Not Stated (illustrator). A bright facsimile edition of George Villiers's satirical play, one of five-hundred and ten copies. A satirical play addressed specifically to John Dryden and the pretentious theatre of the Restoration tragedy. First staged in 1671, The Rehearsal satirised Dryden by using his own words out of context, exposing their innate absurdity; this angered Dryden, who made Villiers into the Zimri in his Absalom and Achitophel.Facsimile edition published in a limited edition of five-hundred and ten copies, the present number two-hundred and nineteen. Illustrated with a frontispiece. In the original publisher's quarter cloth binding over paper covered boards. Externally very smart with minor shelf wear only, spine and boards lightly bumped to extremities. Previous ownership inscription to front pastedown, dated 1945. Internally, firmly bound. Light minor spotting scattered to the leaves, although generally pages appear bright and clean. Illustrated with a frontispiece. Very Good Indeed. book.

George Villiers, Second Duke of Buckingham (1628-1687) was, in addition to being a dramatist, also wrote poetry, political pamphlets and satires. He patronised the arts and was a public figure like his father, the 1st Duke of Buckingham who was long rumoured to be the lover of King James I, appearing in fictional form in one of Alexander Dumas's novels on the Three Musketeers. In The Rehearsal, first staged in 1671, Villiers aims his satire at John Dryden with a self-reflexive look at the staging of a theatrical production.
