Zustand: very good. Amsterdam: Marc Michel Rey,1754. 2 Parts in one volume. Contemp. calf binding. xii,287; iv,296 pp. 8vo. Boards bit rubbed & corners bumped. Very good copy. Two title-pages printed in red & black with vignette. Bookplate. Bit worn on edges. Very good copy. - Jean Lévesque de Burigny (1692-1785), French historian, devoted his time to historical research and published several works which stamped him as a conscientious scholar. Burigny, although sharing the ideas of the philosophers of his time, was by no means an extremist. He was a modest, peace-loving man, whose only ambition was to be a scholar, and his works show a great amount of learning; some, for instance his lives of Grotius and Erasmus, give very interesting data not elsewhere found. Condition : very good copy. Keywords : RECHT, Grotius, Hugo (1583-1645).

First English edition. 8vo, [xii],368, [20], includes index and errata in rear; contemporary mottled calf with gilt borders and spine rules, red leather label. Originally published in French, this was the first proper biography of Grotius, the great Dutch-born philosopher and legal scholar whose legacy had a profound impact on the modern notions of international law. The rear endpaper has an unidentified handwritten ten-line poem "On the Death of Grotius"; ink signature rubbed off from front endpaper; binding edges rubbed, hinges tender; spine with wear, especially at ends, and some flaking.
Couverture rigide. - Chez Isaac Beauregard & Pierre Gosse, à La Haye 1745, In-4 (19,5x25cm), (14) 511pp. et (4) 454pp. (10), 2 volumes reliés. - Edition originale, rare. Pages de titre en rouge et noir. Ornements typographiques : bandeaux, culs-de-lampe, lettrines. [ENGLISH DESCRIPTION ON DEMAND] (14) 511pp. et (4) 454pp. (10).
