Erstausgabe
Hardcover. Zustand: Fine. Two jointly-issued works bound in one volume, quarto. [28], 214, [2, blank]; 215-346, [14, index and errata]pp. Engraved title by Bleyswyck, followed by half-title; collective title in red and black with woodcut vignette, separate title for second part. Contemporary vellum boards, manuscript lettering at spine, owner entry at blank endleaf. A fine copy on large paper. N.B.: Certain collational peculiarites appear to have been occasioned by the (late?) decision to insert a letter by Eduardus Holthenus, dated 1699, which was not included in the first edition (1700) of Zeus Kataibates. The reasons for the inclusion of this letter and its intended placement at p.344 are detailed in a note to the reader which appears on p.215. In our copy both the title page and the "Summarium" are misbound after p.342 (leaf Vv4); the following leaves Xx-Xx2 are reversed. Various descriptions available via OCLC as well as digital surrogates confirm that in many copies a variety of problems in the ordering of the title page and the table of contents appear around p.344. Later collective edition of these two treatises. The Vectigalia treats of Roman tax revenue and financial contributions collected by the state. Each source of taxation is dealt with separately, and Burman discusses in turn general taxes on land, property and capital, import taxes and harbor duties, taxes on metals and salt. The latter work considers the iconography of Zeus as the hurler of lightning on the coins of Cyrrhus, and was first published in 1700. A precocious student with a gift for languages, Pieter Burman the Elder (1668-1741) was tutored by his father's friend, the well-known Latinist Johann Georg Graevius, under whose guidance he mastered the classical languages and completed his subsequent legal studies in 1687. He settled in Utrecht in 1690 as a lawyer, but found no satisfaction in this position. In December 1691 Graevius arranged for him to be appointed receiver of the tithes which were originally paid to the bishop of Utrecht. This position left him much free time to devote to his chief interest, the study of classical literature. The Vectalibus populi Romani (1694) may be considered "the first fruit of his scientific work" (Blok & Molhuysen). Given Burman's legal background and his position as a collector of tithes prior to his professorship, the subject matter of the work would indeed appear to be a suitable point of departure for the aspiring young classical scholar; it is a futher development of his 1687 legal dissertation "On the Julian Law of the Twentieth Inheritance" and his 1688 treatise "De Transactionibus." In 1696 Burman was nominated to the professorship of history and of "eloquence" (i.e. Latin) at Utrecht; in 1715 he was transferred to the corresponding professorship at Leiden where he resided for the remaining twenty-six years of his life (Sandys). Provenance: From the library of the Dutch classical scholar and specialist in early Dutch proverbial literature Willem Hendrik Dominicus Suringar (1805-1877) with his entry at the blank endleaf. References: Blok & Molhuysen, IV, 355. Sandys 2: 443. STCN 230240410.

Cardboard binding, 4°: [28] 346 [10]; [4] 48 [26] pp. Text in Latin.Fine engraving on the red and black title page by F. van Blyswyk and engraved images of four ancient Greek coins. 'Vectigalia populi Romani' was the sequel to Burman's legal dissertation from 1687. The second part, Het stuk dat hierop volgt, 'Zeus kataibatès', is a (numismatic) treatise from 1700 about Zeus imagery on coins from Cyrrhus.Burman is considered one of the eighteenth century's most important philologists. He published countless studies on classical philology, first at Utrecht University (where he eventually left due to several escalating conflicts) and later at Leiden University (where he taught classical languages and, moreover, became the university library's librarian)Also included in this binding is Burmans epitaph, as well as those of Johannes Oosterdijk Schacht, Franciscus Burman, Joannes Arntzenius, Abraham van Toll, Daniël van Alphen, Henr.
