This is one of the most detailed and well-reported accounts of the Burr trial and the trials of his associates. Burr was accused of leading a conspiracy to steal land from Mexico and the Louisiana Purchase in order to establish a nation under his rule. Burr was arrested in 1807 and brought to trial on charges of treason, for which he was acquitted. Israel Smith [1759-1810] served in the Vermont legislature and both houses of the United States Congress. He went on to be Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Vermont and the Governor of that state. Harman Blannerhassett [1765-1831], a wealthy Irish immigrant, owned the island where Burr's troops assembled. Cohen, Bibliography of Early American Law 14090.
