Hardcover. Zustand: Good. xix, 735 p. 24 cm. Frontispiece engraving, title page vignette. Burgundy diced calf with gilt impresssing. Marbled endpapers. Text in two columns. Light wear to extremities. Some foxing and darkening to first pages. Stains to text block edge. First published in 1830, this volume is Thomas Moore's attempt to reproduce his late friend Byron's memoirs. The original memoirs were destroyed after Byron's death in 1824 by his executors and publisher John Murray; the material was, not surprisingly, considered too indecent to publish. Here Moore weaves together his personal recollections and the many letters written to and from the poet.

London: John Murray, 1832. 6 vols. Sm. 8vo. Engraved frontis. and additional engraved title in each vol. Contemporary half calf and marbled boards, backstrips decoratively ruled and lettered in gilt, plain endpapers. Bindings rubbed and worn at extremities, engraved plates toned but otherwise a clean, sound copy. Signatures of M.L. Stent and A. Stent on front free endpaper in each vol. § Moore's Life of Byron in six volumes, first published as Letters and Journals of Lord Byron in 1830, and usually found as the first six volumes in the 17 volume, Works of 1832 (it is possible this is a partial copy of that set). The six volumes contain Moore's entire biography of Byron; vol VI. includes also "Miscellaneous Pieces in Prose," and one additional engraved plate (Hucknell Church). The frontispieces and title-vignettes are by Finden after various artists."[Despite the destruction of the manuscript of Byron's memoirs] Moore none the less remained the best qualified person to write a definitive biography and to edit Byron's poetry. He went diligently in search of materials, and received an abundance of letters and anecdotes from those who had known the poet. The title, Letters and Journals of Lord Byron (1830), distracts attention from the skill with which Moore constructed his portrait. 'Biography', he told Samuel Rogers, 'is like dot engraving, made up of little minute points, which must all be attended to, or the effect is lost' (Letters, 2.608, 21 April 1828). Moore did attend to them, and his biography remains indispensable for students of Byron." (DNB).

Octavo, sixteen volumes, contemporary full calf, gilt titles and tooling to the spine, front and rear panels, marbled endpapers, frontispiece to each volume. In very good condition. "Byron is to a far greater degree than the other romanticists the poet of humankind. He conveys with tremendous power the majesty and desolation of history, the vanity of pomp and pride, the transitoriness of fame. And he is the poet of contemporary society, keen to discern the false and the corrupt, courageous in denunciation yet with pity for the young and innocentâ ¦ As a poet he mirrored brilliantly and without distortion an absorbingly interesting world" (Baugh, 1229).

Volumes three and ten from a French edition of the Complete Works of Byron. Published in French, each with frontispiece. Alongside a memoir of Byron by the Irish poet Thomas Moore, this collection contains a translation of one of Byron's best-known works; Childe Harold's Pilgrimage. Originally published between 1812 and 1818, the the lengthy narrative poem describes the travels and reflections of a world-weary young man who is disillusioned with a life of pleasure and looks for distraction in a foreign land.
