Erstausgabe
FIRST EDITION. 221 x 142 mm. (8 3/4 x 5 5/8"). Two volumes. Contemporary blue three-quarter morocco over marbled boards by Blackwell (stamp-signed on front free endpaper), raised bands, spine panels with gilt floral centerpiece, gilt titling, marbled endpapers, top edges gilt. With eight plates, including two portraits, and a three-page folding facsimile of a letter from Shelley to his wife. Front pastedowns with engraved pictorial bookplate of Louis V. Ledoux, signed "Charlotte A. Morton fecit 1901." Occasional neat pencilled marginalia. â Spines a little sunned, bindings with general (but not serious) shelfwear, hinge with separation at half title of first volume and final text page of second volume, but still an excellent copy without major flaws--internally, clean and fresh with bright plates, and in solid bindings. This is an attractively bound copy of a work "considered the most authoritative 19th-century biography of the poet," according to the British Library and "the first major attempt to see Shelley plain," according to DNB. Literary scholar Ernest Dowden (1843-1913) was given access to the papers of the poet by Shelley's surviving son's wife, Lady Shelley, and was consequently able to add details previously unknown to the public. The biography was a source of controversy, condemned by some--notably critic Matthew Arnold--for its frank depiction of Shelley's "irregular relationships" with women, and by others for absolving Shelley of responsibility for the suicide of his first wife, whom he had abandoned for Mary Wollstonecraft, the daughter of his mentor William Godwin. Our volume was once in the collection of Louis V. Ledoux (1880-1948), a noted authority on, and collector of, Japanese prints. His bookplate was created by American artist Charlotte A. Morton (1885-1974) and is featured in the collection of the Currier Museum of Art and the Pratt Institute Ex-Libris Collection.

Leather. Zustand: Near Fine. None (illustrator). A very scarce facsimile reprint of the manuscript of the visitations of Berkshire during the sixteenth and seventeenth century, this finely bound copy printed by Thomas Phillipps. A very scarce work, with only two on Copac, held at Cambridge University and Oxford University. WorldCat states the work being held at three libraries in the United States, including Yale University Library, and at one library in Munich, Germany. Reproduced in facsimile from the manuscript copy. Smartly rebound in a quarter morocco binding with paper to the boards. A work documenting the 1566 (wrongly dated 1565 in the title of the work), 1623, and 1664 heraldic visitations to Berkshire. The heraldic visitations were inspection tours undertaken by Kings of Arms throughout Great Britain from the years 1530 to 1688. The records provide a great source of material for historians and genealogists. The 1566 visitation was undertaken by William Harvey. The 1623 visitation was undertaken by William Camden. Camden is best known for being the author of 'Britannia', the first chorographical survey of the island of Britain and Ireland. The 1664 visitation was undertaken by Edward Bysshe. Contains Aldworth to Cantrell only, no more of the visitations were published by Thomas Phillipps. Numbers 37 and 38 are omitted in paging, which is expected, as noted in copies held by The Grolier Club in their library, and at Oxford University under the Aleph System Number 010469672. Printed at the Middle Hill Press, or Typis Medio-Montanis, Thomas Phillipps' printing house that he founded in 1822, intended to record his book holdings, and to publish his works on topography and genealogy. The press was in Broadway Tower, a folly in Worcestershire that served as a country retreat for artists like William Morris and Edward Burne-Jones. Phillipps was an impressive book collector. He had inherited a substantial estate and spent most of it on vellum manuscripts. Over his life he collected forty-thousand printed books, and sixty-thousand manuscripts. With fifty-six blanks to the rear. A smartly bound very scarce look at the sixteenth and seventeenth century visitations at Berkshire, printed at a private press by Thomas Phillipps, printed in facsimile from the original manuscript. In a quarter morocco binding with paper to the boards. Externally, smart. A couple of light marks to the rear board. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and generally clean, though with some spots to the facsimile pages due to the paper type used. Near Fine. book.

Leather. Zustand: Very Good Indeed. None (illustrator). A very scarce copy of Thomas Phillipps' publication of the documents recounting the 1566, 1623 and 1664 visitations to Berkshire. This copy was formerly owned by Joan Corder. A very scarce work, with only two on Copac, held at Cambridge University and Oxford University. WorldCat states the work being held at three libraries in the United States, including Yale University Library, and at one library in Munich, Germany. Reproduced in facsimile from the manuscript copy. Lacking the title page. A work documenting the 1566 (wrongly dated 1565 in the title of the work), 1623, and 1664 heraldic visitations to Berkshire. The heraldic visitations were inspection tours undertaken by Kings of Arms throughout Great Britain from the years 1530 to 1688. He had inherited a substantial estate and spent most of it on vellum manuscripts. Over his life he collected forty-thousand printed books, and sixty-thousand manuscripts. With eighteen pages of blanks to the rear. Bookplate of Joan Corder to the front pastedown. Corder collected many genealogical and heraldic manuscripts, many focused on East Anglia. She wrote a work documenting the descendents of Jane Austen, recording about three-hundred and twenty descendents of George and Cassandra Austen in 1953. It is an invaluable work, but she never found a publisher, and there are only two manuscripts, one of which is at the Jane Austen House Museum in Chawton. In WWII she worked as a plotter in the WAAF, after which she worked at visiting every church in Suffolk, writing 'Effigy Monuments in Suffolk'. She died in 2005. Rebacked in a half morocco binding with cloth to the boards, the original spine lain on. Externally, smart. A little fading to the original spine. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright with some scattered spots. Very Good Indeed. book.

First edition, first printing. Publisher's original pictorial cloth with titles in black and panoramic colour illustration by Edward Bawden across the boards and spine, in matching dustwrapper. Illustrated with 16 full-page colour plates by Edward Bawden. A lovely near fine copy, the binding firm with light rubbing to the extremities. A diverse anthology of verse "by those who have travelled in fancy or fact or in both", plotting "an erratic course round the world with the poets for guide", taking "the reader from West to East and back again". Superbly illustrated by Edward Bawden following his recent role as official War Artist, during which he had travelled through France, Abyssinia, Iraq, Persia and Italy, as reflected in his contributions to the present work. Lawrence, Herman Melville, Milton, William Morris, Rossetti, Shakespeare, Shelley, Wordsworth and Yeats, amongst many others. Part of the 'New Excursions into English Poetry' series.
