8vo. pp. viii, 303. with half-title. 19th century half calf (binding worn, front cover detached, rear joint cracked, dampstains in lower margin, first few leaves foxed). armorial bookplate of English lawyer & politician, William Tooke [1777-1863], probably inherited from his father, the Russian historian of the same name. First Edition of this biography of the Grigory Potemkin [1739-1791], Russian military leader, statesman, nobleman and favourite of Catherine the Great who named him Prince of the Holy Roman Empire and Prince of Russia. Potemkin distinguished himself in the Russo-Turkish War (1768-74) and later was made Grand Admiral and Commander-in-Chief of Russia's military forces. His achievements include the peaceful annexation of the Crimea in 1783 and the successful second Russo-Turkish War, 1787-92. [BOUND WITH:] DUMONT, [Pierre] Étienne [Louis] [1759-1829]. Souvenirs Sur Mirabeau Et Sur Les Deux Assemblées Législatives. 8vo. pp. 1 p.l., ix, xv, 342. 12 leaves (1 folding) of facsimile letters. (dampstains in lower margin of first 2 leaves). London: Edward Bull, 1832. First Edition. Dumont was in Paris during the early years of the French Revolution (1789 to 1791) where he "[renewed] his acquaintance with Mirabeau, whom he found occupied with his duties as a deputy, and with the composition of his journal, the Courrier de Provence. For a time Dumont took an active and very efficient part in the conduct of this journal, supplying it with reports as well as original articles, and also furnishing Mirabeau with speeches to be delivered or rather read in the assembly, as related in his highly instructive and interesting posthumous work entitled Souvenirs sur Mirabeau (1832)."
