12mo., pp. [ii], 276. Internally very clean. Later dark green morocco, gilt spine, borders and dentelles, a.e.g., marbled endpapers. Spine faded, very good indeed. Small, blue-bordered label with MS letter V to front pastedown. The title-page is the variant in which the 'T' of 'CATULLUS' is slightly oversized. Page 209 is misnumbered 109 as usual. Leaf A2 is a cancel. According to Gaskell, 800 copies remained in Baskerville's stock in 1775. Dibdin describes this edition, based on Coustelier's 1743 production, as 'very beautiful', though 'not esteemed for accuracy'. ESTC T4788; Gaskell 45; Dibdin I (4th ed) 377.

The attractive, gilt armorial binding was produced c. 1700 for Nicolas Lambert, seigneur of Thorigny and Vermont. Very good, crisp copy of this Aldine first edition, edited by Hieronymo Avantio, of the immortal poems of Catullus, Tibullus and Propertius the three most important elegiac authors of the late Roman republic and early imperial era. First printed by Wendelin of Speyer in Venice in 1472, Catullus, Propertius and Tibullus s poems revealed a new poetic feeling rejecting the heroic character of the epic tradition in favour of a more familiar tone and intimate subjects like love, erotic desire, rejection and mourning. Gaius Valerius Catullus (84-54BC) spent most of his life in Rome where he was acquainted with important authors and politicians. His most famous carmina , 116 of which are extant, include verse on his love and desire for Lesbia , and lampoons against public figures like Julius Caesar. Albius Tibullus (55-19BC) was part of the circle of the Roman orator and politician Marcus Valerius Messalla Corvinus. His verse survives in four books, only the first two of which are of safe attribution, and is mostly devoted to his intense and star-crossed love for the married Delia . Sextus Propertius (c.50-15BC) enjoyed the protection of Maecenas and Augustus and is most famous for his four books of poems, many written for his beloved Cynthia . This elegiac collection format was successfully republished in Europe throughout the century; in the 1590s, several editions appeared in which the texts were castigati and expurgati of their most obvious sexual references. This copy was once part of the Bibliotheca Lamoniana. First acquired by Guillaume de Lamoignon in 1650, the library was augmented from 2500 to over 6000 volumes in the following century, especially by Chrétien François II de Lamoignon. Upon his death in 1789, it was sold to the English bookseller Thomas Payne. Nicolas Lambert (1659-1729) de Thorigny and Vermont was a French politician and bibliophile. Like several members of the Lamoignon family, he held office as a Parliamentary councillor and then president of one of the chambers. Robert Dalrymple (also Hamilton) (b. 1716) was probably the third son of Sir Robert of Castleton (d. 1734) and grandson of Sir Hew Dalrymple, 1st Baronet of North Berwick. Fredrik Wulff (1845-1930) was professor of philology at Lund. TIB. PROP. LVCA gilt to centre, and (rear) identical gilt leaves to corners and gilt-stamped sun to centre, raised bands, compartments double blind-ruled, traces of paper label at head, a.e.g. (oxydised), minor expert restoration to head and foot of spine, and corners. Ms Latin ex-libris of Xanthe (Santi) Voconius to first title, two additional ms annotations in his hand to penultimate leaf of first part (Italian verse) and last of second part (Latin quotation from Pontanus), his occasional ms marginalia throughout. The charming binding was probably produced in Bologna c.1530-40 by the Pflug and Ebeleben binder. To that workshop are also attributed two bindings at the Bib. dell'Archiginnasio (16.i.III.7, 4.Q.V.27), which share the same blind roll of vine leaves, a typically Bolognese motif. The early owner, Sante Voconio, is indeed recorded at Bologna in the 1530s. His vernacular literary skills of which we have a rare ms example in this copy ( Quand io veggio la terra / Vestir dinuovo in falda un bianco .) - were commended by the Italian scholar Claudio Tolomei (1492-1556) in his printed correspondence. Although he offered to facilitate the printing of Voconio s works, nothing has apparently survived. Very good copy of this Aldine first edition (first issue) of the poems of Catullus, Tibullus and Propertius the three most important elegiac authors of the late Roman republic and early imperial era. The ed. Of 1502 was composed by Aldus and Aavantius; the former wrote the preface, the latter the epistle, at the end of Catullus, to Marino Sanudo, a Venetian nobleman (Dibdin). Catullus s (84-54BC) carmina , 116 of which are extant, include verse on his love and desire for Lesbia , and lampoons against public figures like Julius Caesar. Propertius (c.50-15BC) enjoyed the protection of Maecenas and Augustus and is most famous for his four books of poems, many written for his beloved Cynthia . This elegiac collection format was successfully republished in Europe throughout the century. Bound together is a copy of the first Aldine edition of Pharsalia , an epic poem by the 1st-century Roman author Lucan on the civil war between Julius Caesar and Pompey, a complex blend of fiction and historical reality. This ed. is 'formed chiefly on the Venetian one of 1493, with the commentaries of Sulpitius; but Aldus in his preface mentions some corrections wich are made from an ancient and valuable ms. communicated to him by Mauroceno, to whom he dedicates the work (Dibdin). 148, [2] ll.Second Aldine edition of a collection of poems by three of the most important classical poets of the 1st century BCE, writing in the elegiac tradition. The poets Gaius Valerius Catullus (84-55 BCE), Albius Tibullus (55-19 BCE) and Sextus Propertius (50-15 BCE), had a strong preference for writing about intimate and familiar subjects as love, eroticism, rejection and mourning, which sets their lyrical and elegiac poetry apart from the heroic poetry of many other, earlier classical poets who often focused on the epic of heroes. In the present work, the poets express their love and desire for various women, among others "Lesbia" (Catullus), "Delia" (Tibellus) and "Cynthia" (Propertius). he binding is finely executed and the binder s stamp gives the initial G of his first name. Fléty records him merely as "Vignal" without first name or initial, but he is presumably Vignal fils, for Devauchelle, III, p. 54, notes that Georges Trautz (1808-1872/79) used the services of Vignal père, an "excellent décorateur". The son clearly deserves to be better known. With an occasional contemporary annotation in faded, brown ink. Slightly browned, but otherwise in very good condition and only about 4 mm trimmed at the head and foot. The binding also very good, with only slight wear to the hinges and tiny scuffs on the raised bands, the head and foot of the spine and the board edges.l Adams C1139; Ahmanson-Murphy 113; Aldo Manuzio tipografo 133.1; BM STC Italian, p. 161; Dibdin I, p. 374; EDIT16 10358; Renouard 1515:1 (p. 70); USTC 821183; for the binder Vignal: Fléty, p. 174.

[152] ll.First Aldine edition of a collection of poems by three of the most important classical poets of the 1st century BCE, writing in the elegiac tradition, this copy with the outer forme of the first quire (A) in the corrected state, with "Propertius" on the title-page instead of the erroneous "Propetius" (a press variant: as far as we know, it is always correct in the running heads and where the three names on the title-page repeat on i8v). The poets Gaius Valerius Catullus (84-55 BCE), Albius Tibullus (55-19 BCE) and Sextus Propertius (50-15 BCE), had a strong preference for writing about intimate and familiar subjects such as love, eroticism, rejection and mourning, which sets their lyrical and elegiac poetry apart from the heroic poetry of many other, earlier classical poets, who often focused on the epic of heroes. In the present work, the poets express their love and desire for various women, among others "Lesbia" (Catullus), "Delia" (Tibellus) and "Cynthia" (Propertius). The present collection of poems became very successful as they ran through many, sometimes bowdlerized, editions throughout the 16th century. It is also often regarded as one of the most successful works of the Aldine press. With some 17th-century(?) Latin annotations in the margins and occasional underlining, both in brown ink; a 1772 owner's inscription on the otherwise blank i7v: "Jo Antonio Icodori[?] da P[?]o vora[?]; and the armorial bookplate of the Edinburgh advocate William Hugh Murray (1822/23-1867) of Geanies on the front paste-down. Lightly washed, probably the binder s attempt to make the annotations, inscription and occasional minor stains or smudges less prominent (some small brown marginal stains in e7 just reach the text on e7v), a small marginal tear repaired. Binding a little worn at the extremities. Overall in good condition and with generous margins.l Adams C1138 (with "Propetius" corrected as in ours: cf.
