Edinburgh 20.X.1863. 4 Seiten 8°. - An den schottischen Anatomen und Physiologen William Sharpey (1802-1880) am University College in London über die verzögerte Neuausgabe seines "Dispensatory, or Commentary on the Pharmacopaeias of Great Britain". ". Without your supplementary information I should have had to express my amazement, with its help I have still had to declare my surprise, in replying to Mr. Green's letter. I think it is a month ago since it appeared to me that my change of the Pharmacopaeia was wholly at an end. Farre indeed did then darkly throw out a doubt as to my confidence that the book would still appear before October come to an end. But I had no idea that there was any Editorial hitch, or superfluous delay, otherwise I should have tried what could be done for relief by the dubious authority of the Pharm. Comm. Chairman . I propose that the Executive Committee, with my concurrence, should authorise Farre to send the sheets to press so soon as he himself is satisfied with them, provided the cause of delay is mere procrastination in Edinburgh or Dublin .".

Edinburgh 21.IV.(1837?). 2 Seiten 8°. Leicht fleckig, kleine Randeinrisse repariert. ". Let me introduce to you Mr. Graham of Glasgow, one of the candidates for your Chemical Chair. Fame here reports that he stands at the head of your present list. If so be the case, I am sure the good opinion of him expressed in his numerous testimonials . There is one part of his character on which no testimonials of a public nature can touch, and which I beg to fill up, - namely that he is a most excellent man in every possible sense of the word ."

". Your experiments and Kölliker's with Antiar are very curious certainly. Kölliker writes Syme that his will appear presently before your Royal Society . Humboldt called the Guiana poison Curare. The good Kölliker will insist on calling it so, though I took pains, an irrefragable German authority, that of Richard Schomburgk, to show him that it is Urari among the natives (Macusi) who make the best at the Essequibo sources; and that it it is corrupted . into Woorali, and Brasil-wards into Curare .".

1 S. auf Doppelblatt. 8vo. Mit eh. Adresse. An W. H. Campbell: I should have had very great pleasure in joining your party to celebrate the anniversary of the institution of the Botanical Society on Friday evening. But I have received intelligence this evening from Berwickshire which will compel me to set off for that quarter to-morrow morning to see my Brother s wife who is ill; and I fear it will be impossible for me to return in time on Friday for your party [ ]". Christison war Professor der gerichtlichen Arzneikunde und der medizinischen Polizei in Edinburgh; 1837 wurde er auch Professor für Chemie. His fame as a toxicologist and medical jurist, together with his work on the pathology of the kidneys and on fevers, secured him a large private practice, and he succeeded to a fair share of the honors that commonly attend the successful physician, being appointed physician to Queen Victoria in 1848 and receiving a baronetcy in 1871" (Wikipedia, Abfrage v. 29. September 2007).

1p, 12mo. In good condition, lightly aged, with thin strip of paper from mount adhering to reverse. Folded twice. With Christison's expansive signature, and written while Story future Principal and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Glasgow was studying at the University of Edinburgh. If he is not 'prevented by professional occupations, which are apt to be rather pressing at this season', it will give him great pleasure 'to attend on the occasion of the delivering of the address of Sir E. B. Lytton to the Associated Societies of the University on the evening of Wednesday the 18th. Instant'. The subject of the letter is the novelist and Whig MP (1803-1873), later Lord Bulwer-Lytton. From the distinguished autograph collection of the psychiatrist Richard Alfred Hunter (1923-1981), whose collection of 7000 works relating to psychiatry is now in Cambridge University Library. Hunter and his mother Ida Macalpine had a particular interest in the illness of King George III, and their book 'George III and the Mad Business' (1969) suggested the diagnosis of porphyria popularised by Alan Bennett in his play 'The Madness of George III'.

Christison was the author of a standard Victorian textbook of toxicology and founder of a medical dynasty; see his 1885 autobiography and his entry in the Oxford DNB (the latter also contains an entry for Bowman). 2pp, 12mo. In fair condition, lightly aged. Folded twice, with small closed tear at edge of one fold. Looping stylized signature R. Christison . He begins by referring to a previous communication received from the South of England on the subject of the Nitrate of Iron as a remedy for chronic diarrhoea . He assumes that Dr Graves took his information from some old pupil of mine, who, carrying away with him the main fact, had forgotten the original purpose of the remedy, and ascribed the suggestion of it to myself , when in fact the gentleman who first proposed the nitrate of sesquioxide of iron was Mr. Wm. Kerr, at one time surgeon in Paisley, and now of Glasgow . He gives a reference to a paper in the Edinburgh Medical and Surgical Journal which gives his observations, with the mode of preparing it . Christison has only to add to the statement made there that he has occasionally used it, and found reason to be satisfied of its efficacy .
