While he gained some success in comic roles, he was ridiculed as a tragedian. Nevertheless, his calling was in all aspects of theatrical life, from performance to staging and managing. After acting at Drury Lane for ?ve years, Cibber wrote Love's Last Shift . It was a great success, and he continued writing and pelforming. In 1710, Cibber bought the Drury Lane company with two other partners, He continued to appear on stag in his own plays, as well as in adaptations of Shakespeare's works. He was appointed Poet Laureate in 1730 over Alexander Pope, although his poetic abilities were far from being comparable. Pope, in turn, made Cibber the mock-hero of his Dunciad, giving him the title King of the Dunces. An interesting collection of plays from one of 18th century London's most visible characters.
