Februar 1612 in Rom) war Mathematiker und Jesuitenpater am Collegio Romano. Von seinen Zeitgenossen 'Euklid des 16. Jahrhunderts' genannt, wurde er vor allem durch die unter seiner fachlichen Leitung durchgeführte Kalenderreform zum Gregorianischen Kalender berühmt, die 1582 mit der Bulle 'Inter gravissimas' von Papst Gregor XIII. verfügt wurde. Clavius setzte dabei einen Reformentwurf von Aloisius Lilius um, der bereits 1576 verstorben war. . Clavius verfasste mehrere Mathematikbücher, unter anderem einen Kommentar zu Euklid (1574) und zum wichtigsten astronomischen Lehrbuch des Spätmittelalters, zur 'Sphaera' des Johannes de Sacrobosco. Der Kommentar von Clavius war eines der einflussreichsten Astronomielehrbücher seiner Zeit und erlebte zwischen 1570 und 1618 mindestens 16 Auflagen, wobei Clavius den Text selbst siebenmal überarbeitete und dabei jeweils zum Teil stark erweiterte. 1608 verfasste er ein Lehrbuch der Algebra. . Clavius und seine Schüler am Collegio Romano unterhielten kollegial-freundschaftliche Beziehungen zu Galileo Galilei und korrespondierten mit ihm von 1587 bis zu seinem Tod unter anderem über neue Entdeckungen mit dem Fernrohr; die Phasengestalt der Venus entdeckten die römischen Jesuiten unabhängig von Galilei und vielleicht sogar vor ihm. . Die Gregorianische Kalenderreform wurde im Wesentlichen von Clavius auf Basis der Vorschläge des 1576 verstorbenen Aloisius Lilius gestaltet und durchgeführt. Auf den 4. Oktober 1582 folgte unmittelbar der 15. Oktober 1582. Seither sind alle durch vier teilbaren Jahre Schaltjahre, alle durch 100 teilbaren Jahre jedoch nur dann, wenn sie gleichzeitig durch 400 teilbar sind. Die Reform wurde in den protestantischen und orthodoxen Ländern erst sehr viel später umgesetzt. Zur wissenschaftlichen Rechtfertigung der Reform veröffentlichte Clavius die zwei Schriften 'Novi calendarii Romani apologia' (Rom, 1588) und 'Romani calendarii a Gregorio XIII restituti explicatio' (Rom, 1603)." This is the second volume only of this 1574 edition of Euclid s Elementa edited by Christoph Clavius (1537-1612), the Bamberg Jesuit and professor of mathematics at the Collegium Romanum, who supplemented it with his monumental commentary. This Roman publication represents one of the greatest achievements in the history of Renaissance mathematics. His contemporaries called Clavius the Euclid of the 16th century . Nel testo, numerose illustrazioni silografiche di diagrammi vari. Prima edizione di questa celebre opera di Clavius, pubblicata in successione al Gnomonices Libri VIII del 1582. Christoph Clavius fu gesuita, matematico e astronomo tedesco, forte contrappositore alle teorie coopernicane, reso celebre in particolare per il suo Commento alla Sfera del Sacrobosco e per il suo contributo alla definizione del calendario gregoriano gesuita. Egli divenne il più autorevole matematico dei gesuiti e tra i più autorevoli del suo tempo, redasse un gran numero di opere a carattere scientifico e astronomico di grande rilievo. Come astronomo segue il modello geocentrico del sistema solare, il modello ortodosso suffragato dall'opera di Claudio Tolomeo, opponendosi al modello eliocentrico proposto da Niccolò Copernico. Esemplare in discrete condizioni, la legatura moderna eseguita non proprio a regola d'arte, gora laterale a praticamente tutto il volume.
