Erstausgabe
Hardback. Zustand: Near Fine. Not Stated (illustrator). First edition. A beautifully illustrated copy of this delightful encyclopedia compiled for Cupid by Oliver Herford and John Cecil Clay. First edition. Bound in the publisher's original pictorial paper-covered boards, with the original, unclipped and very scarce dust wrapper, complete with heart-shaped cutout. This charming, alphabetical work features words and phrases relating to romance and love, compiled by the author's for 'John Cupid'. Written at the start of the twentieth century, this work presents an amusing, somewhat outdated view on love and relationships, where the word 'Secret' is labelled as 'A Feminine invention for the rapid dissemination of news' and 'Suspicion' is defined as 'A hair of the wrong colour'. Written by Oliver Herford and John Cecil Clay, a pair of authors and illustrators known for their humorous approach.Wonderfully illustrated with colour vignettes and full-page drawings throughout. Bound in the publisher's original pictorial paper-covered boards, with the original, unclipped dust wrapper. Externally, excellent, with light bumping to the extremities and the occasional marking to boards. Dust wrapper is also very smart, with light edge wear and the odd closed tear. Slight age toning to the wraps, with tape repair to the verso. Internally, firmly bound. Pages bright and clean. The odd page unopened. Near Fine. book.
