Written under Scott's pseudonym Jedediah Cleishbotham, described as schoolmaster and parish-clerk of Gandercleugh. Sir Walter Scott was a Scottish historical novelist, playwright, poet and historian. His famous works include 'Waverley', 'Ivanhoe' and 'The Lady of the Lake'. Scott was also a prominent member of the Tory party in Scotland, and served a the long term President of the Royal Society of Edinburgh. Through his friend James Ballantyne, who founded a printing press in the Scottish Borders, Scott was able to publish his first poetical works, bringing them to the public attention. His works gained much success both in the U.K and across Europe. Many of the German translations of his works we set to music by the composer Franz Shubert. Complete in four volumes. In a half buckram bindings with paper covered boards and publishers original spine labels. Externally, a trifle rubbed with wear to extremities and spine. Front joint of volume three is starting, and all hinges are strained. Both boards to volume four are held by the cords only. Splitting to the backstrip of each volume. This work is comprised of Volume I, 'Count Robert of Paris', Volume II, 'Count Robert of Paris' and Volume III, 'Castle Dangerous'. A smartly bound copy of this famous novel by Sir Walter Scott, from his 'Tales of my Landlord Series' under the pseudonym, Jedediah Cleishbotham. With an illustrated title page, and a folding facsimile plate of Sir Walter Scott's handwriting. This novel was first published alongside, 'The Black Dwarf' for the first series of his 'Tales of my Landlord' creation. These tales were purported to be tales collected from the fictional landlord of the Wallace Inn at Gandercleugh, compiled by 'Peter Pattieson' and edited by 'Dedediah Cleishbotham'. 'The Tale of Old Mortality', or 'Old Mortality', is set in Southern Scotland in the years 1679-1689. It follows Robert Paterson, a Scotsman who decided to travel around Scotland re-engraving the tombs of 17th century Covenanter martyrs. There is a lengthy description on the background of Peter Pattieson and Jedediah Cleishbotham to the introduction. This particular copy, was originally intended to be volume v of a wider set of Scott's works. It has been bound as an individual volume. Prize bookplate to the front pastedown, from University College School, dated 1862 addressed to Frederick Richards. There were eventually four series from the 'Tales from my Landlord' series by Scott. In a full calf binding. Externally, smart, with just some light rubbing to the joints and extremities.
