Antwerpen, Apud Henricum & Cornelium Verdussen, 1713, in-folio, 36 x 24 cm, title with large engraved printer's mark + (8) + 367 pp (err.397), all pages printed in red & black with a typographical border consisting of a pair of fillets, with 68 copper-engravings 13 x 18 cm printed in the text, with wood-engraved initials. Contemporary full calf, raised back, some wear at top turn in but a solid binding. Apart from a marginal waterstain at the last 80 pp a good and clean copy. First edition in the Low Countries of an extremely rare illustrated liturgical manual for bishops. As there were at any given moment only a handfull of bishops in the Low Countries, one can imagine that this book was only printed in very low numbers. Nevertheless the publishers saw to it that the typographical execution and illustrations were up to the important use of this book.Three copper engravings are signed ''L.Cause sculpsit''.

Roman catholic liturgy edition which contains the performance of episcopal functions (e.g. conferring of confirmation and Holy orders), It is practically an episcopal ritual, containing formularies and rubrics which existed in the old Sacramentaries and "Ordines Romani", and were gradually collected together to form one volume for the greater convenience of the officiating bishop. They were known under the names of "Liber Sacramentorum", "Liber Officialis", "Liber Pontificalis", "Ordinarium Episcopale", etc. The first printed edition, prepared by John Burchard and Augustine Patrizi Piccolomini, papal masters of ceremonies, was published (1485) in the pontificate of Innocent VIII. Clement VIII published a corrected and official edition in 1596. In his constitution "Ex quo in Ecclesia Dei" he declared this Pontifical obligatory, forbade the use of any other and prohibited any modification or addition to it without papal permission. Galle). The missal is entirely printed in red and black, with numerous woodcut ornamental initials which are also printed in red and black; many pages with printed scores of music ( red printed staves). On the inside of the first fly-leaf is a contemporary manuscript ex-libris '' Le Roy Prestre . escl. de M. 1749 '' (?). . Fine interior allthough there is some slight uniform browning at some pages. Binding : French 18th century full red morocco; marbled endpapers and fly leaves. Both covers with identical gilt tooling consisting of a triple fillet quadrangle with fleurons at the corners; within a triple fillet at the margins. Large central laurel medallion with in the centre a 7 starred crown above the initials M.A. ( Holy Mary), underneath the initials a gilt heart, all edges gilt. Richly decorated spine. The book still contains the original silk book mark. Two corners very slightly bumped, some very minor traces of use but still a very good copy of an impressive book in a very handsome French full morocco binding. Interesting specimen of an important liturgical books produced by the Plantin Press in Antwerp. The company had already in the preceding century acquired the monopoly for producing these missals for the Netherlands , Spain and the whole of South America.

12. Mechliniae (Mechelen), H. Dessain, successor P.J. Hanicq, 1858, large in-4°, 36 x 25 cm, (48) nn pp ( with 2 full page wood-engravings) + 488 pp + cxxxi pp + (7) pp + 66 pp ( Missae propriae sanctorum archidioecesis Coloniensis). All pages printed in red and black and within typographicals fillets. With numerous large woodcut initials. With a total of 9 full page wood-engravings made by H. Brown ( some signed in the woodblock). Interior genarally fine with the exception of the (daily used) canon part of the missal. These pages show some thumbing and wear. BINDING: Full brown morocco over wooden boards , raised spine with gilt title . All edges gilt, with matching leather tabs bearing gilt initials. Both covers have four large nearly rectangular recesses around a small central lozange. Marbled endpapers. The binding has two large silver-plated clasps and 8 silver-plated corner protections, together with on both covers 4 hexagonal silver-plated studs. On the inside of the movable parts of the clasps is engraved '' D. 27 Novemb. 1858 Th. & B '', on the other clasp '' P. Schwann''. From the contents of the missal we may deduce that its first use was for the diocese of Cologne ( Köln) in Germany. The meaning of the engraved inscriptions remain unclear. It could be the name of the donor, the first owner, or even the bookbinder. Fine specimen of a missal of the Roman Catholic Church in a very well preserved spectacular binding with metal ornaments and clasps. The missal, always in Latin, was the most important book in the Roman catholic liturgy and served during mass (Eucharist celebration). It was made universal for the Church at the Council of Trent (1545-1563) and virtually made redundant at the Second Vatican Council in the 1960's.

Venetiis ( Venice -Venetia), apud Haeredes Balleonios , 1849, format in-folio (40 x 25 cm). Title page with engraved vignet and typographical border printed in blue + 44 pp + 1 leaf with lithographed ills. on both sides + 548 pp + lxxxviii (88) pp + (1)(errata) + 3 full page mezzotint plates. (complete but for 1 lithograph -tabula I (?) in the introductory leaves). The missal is entirely printed in red and black, in two columns, with numerous woodcut initials, all page with a double fillet border with corner ornaments.; many pages with printed scores of music ( red printed staves, 12 per column). Bound in contemporary half roan, boards covered with marbled paper, binding with some wear but still a very good copy with a near spotless interior. The missal was probably never used. It belonged to the library of the Belgian printing house Hanicq - (later) Dessain, which collected these missals as they were themselves publishers of missals and liturgical books for the Roman Catholic Church. (Identification via a small paper label on the spine with only a number ( nr. 714). In-folio missals in this condition are very rare. The book was in daily use during the celebration of the mass which resulted after a lapse of time in heavy wear.
