A Paris, Chez Méquignon-Marvis, Libraire pour la partie de Médicne, 1819, 4°, (4) 74 pp., Halbldereinband im Schuber. First Edition! This thesis was Cloquet's medical thesis. It gives directions for the preparation of a human skeleton from cadaver to mounted specimen! Further we find in this volume a second title leaf for his "Concours pour la place de Chef de Travaux Anatomiques" which names also his "Reserches sur les causes de l'anatomie des Hernies abdominales. Thèse 1819", but unfortunately this text is not present in this volume, but the 10 lithographic plates are present. This "lithographed plates in the work of 1819 were drawn on stone by Cloquet himself, and are among the earliest lithographed medical illustrations." G&M Jules Germain Cloquet (1790-1883) was the younger brother of Hippolyte Cloquet (1787-1840) He initially' worked as an apprentice in the workshop of his father who was a draughtsman, and later as modeller of anatomical figures in the faculty of Paris He first studied the natural sciences in Rouen, but came to Paris in 1810 to devote himself to medicine. Already in the following year he became preparator of anatomy at the medical school, and become prosector at the faculty in 1815. In 1817 he was conferred doctor of medicine with a dissertation on abdominal hernias, of which he had sectioned some 300. Hernias remained an important element of his research. The same year he was awarded a prize from the Académie des Sciences for a treatise which was not published until six years later. In 1819 Cloquet competed successfully for the position as Chief of Surgery (Chirurgien en Chef) at Hôpital St. Louis. Besides his work on hernias, he is also credited with the first description of the central canal of the (the hyaloid canal). In 1821 he was elected one of the first members of the Academy of Medicine In 1824, again through competition, he was appointed professor Agrégé of Surgery. In 1831, once more through competition, he was appointed professor of surgical pathology at the Medical Faculty of Paris, in 1834 also of clinical surgery . He had to resign from all practical activities in 1841-1842 as his health no longer permitted him to continue working. However, in 1851 he was appointed Chirurgien Consultant to the emperor. In 1855 he became a member of the Academy of Sciences, and he was also a corresponding member of the Academy of Natural Sciences in Philadelphia. Cloquet commenced the publication of his famous work Anatomie de l'Homme in 1821. The complete work contains some 1300 illustrations, most of them made by Cloquet himself, and they took ten years to publish in extenso. Cloquet reformed theoretical education through the use of pictures and models as well as actual samples. His lectures were collected and published by Dominique-Jean Baron Larrey (1766-1842). Besides a large number of treatises on surgery and anatomy, Cloquet is credited with the invention of several surgical instruments, among them the artery forceps and a device for the removal of foreign bodies .-Ole Daniel Enersen The thesis was Cloquet's medical thesis, the second thesis (named on the second title page Recherches sur les Causes et LAnatomie des Hernies Abdominales. The se Soutemie publiquement dans i Amphiteatre de la Faculté de Medicine de Paris but without the actual text portion) was wntten in competition for the anatomy chair at the Pans faculty The first gives directions for the preparation of a human skeleton from cadaver to mounted specimen, while the second covers the causes and anatomy of the abdominal herma and fC." tSeneS °f ^graphs draw n by the author The w ork is based on Cloquets s experience with more XoTen!ia T^tographic plates in the work of 1819 w ere drawn by Cloquet himself, and are among the earliest litographed medical illustrations . pp. iv, 74, 176. 10 lithographed plates. Un-numbered Dedication leaf to Dumeril inserted between the first two leaves of the prelims. Original drab brown coated wrappers, uncut, some browning of the paper, a few early leaves dog-eared, book-plate of the J. W. Clark Museum of Zoology, Cambridge, a couple of later Cambridge stamps and call numbers on the title, an unsophisticated copy. *GARRISON-MORTON #3585, the enlarged re-issue of his 1817 doctoral thesis, written in application for the head of the anatomy section of the Medical Faculty in Paris. The four plates for the earlier thesis were engraved by Cloquet's father J. B. A. Cloquet, artist, art teacher and engraver. The plates for this work were all drawn on stone by Cloquet himself and are among the earliest lithographed medical illustrations. The young Cloquet had been apprenticed to his father as an engraver; he subsequently worked as a wax-modeller in the Paris medical faculty, and from there moved to medicine. Lithography was first used in Paris in 1815, in the newly established work-shop of Charles Philibert. A second works, under Gottfried Engelmann, was set up in 1816, and by 1821, when Cloquet issued volume one of his great anatomy atlas, there were several lithographic workshops in Paris. Cloquet's illustrations were in accord with the high romantic view of anatomical drawing of the period. [See ROBERTS & TOMLINSON The Fabric of the Body, pp.534 et seq.]. Comparison of other copies of this work reveal that he altered the images during production - there are differences in detail of structure and numbering and lettering in at least three of the plates [nos. III, VI & VIII]. The first part of the work - De la Squeletopée - describes the preparation of a human skeleton for teaching purposes, from cadaver to the mounted specimen. The following, main portion, was based upon the results of over 500 cases of hernia in which Cloquet was personally involved, 200 anatomical preparations that he presented to the Faculty and over 600 drawings '.d'aprés nature' that he had made [See the Avant-Propos to the above and HEIRS OF HIPPOCRATES #859, which, incidentally only gives pp. 72 for the first part of the work, presumably lacking the Table, a single leaf 'k' - the copy offered above appears to be unusually complete, since the dedication leaf is also not always present].
