Six volumes reliés plein veau, dos à nerfs ornés, caissons ornés, titre dorés, étiquettes de titre rouges, de tomaison marron, roulette dorée sur les coupes, tranches rouges, au centre des plats chiffres de Marie-Caroline de Bourbon-Siciles, duchesses de Berry. Reliures usées mais encore solides et "décoratives", manque de cuir au dos de tome V, coiffes usées ou absentes, mors légèrement fendus, coins émoussés, intérieur en bon état. Portrait gravé d'Edward en frontispice, répété à chaque volume, vignette de titre. Édition originale de la traduction française, l'anglaise ayant paru 2 ans plus tôt. Histoire détaillée de la guerre civile écrite par un acteur important durant les événements de cette période de l'histoire anglaise. Provenance : ex-libris de la Bibliothèque de Rosny, ex-libris de Ô Sullian et de Diane Gratzmuller. Cet exemplaire est répertorié sous le n°2075 dans le Catalogue de la riche bibliothèque de Rosny, dans laquelle se trouvent les grands et beaux ouvrages à figures publié lors de la vente de la bibliothèque en 1837 ((Bossange & Techener). Marie Caroline Ferdinande Louise de Bourbon, princesse des Deux-Siciles (Caserte, 5 novembre 1798 - Brünnsee, 16 avril 1870), est issue de la famille royale de Naples, branche des Bourbon. Elle est plusconnue sous son titre de duchesse de Berry, épouse de Charles-Ferdinand d'Artois, duc de Berry, second fils du futur roi Charles X. Il fut assassiné en 1820 par Louis-Pierre Louvel, qui espérait ainsi éteindre etéliminer de la succession au trône de France la branche légitimiste des Bourbon. Enceinte lorsque son mari fut assassiné, elle est la mère du duc de Bordeaux, dit « l enfant du miracle », Henri Dieudonné, prétendant légitimiste au trône de France sous le nom d « Henri V ». Au nom de son fils, comte de Chambord depuis 1830, Marie-Caroline tenta en vain de prendre le pouvoir en France en 1832 en qualité de« régente ». Elle est à l'origine des dernières insurrections chouannes et vendéennes qui secouèrent le centre-ouest et le nord-ouest de la France en mai et juin 1832.Retirée au pavillon de Marsan après l assassinat de son mari, elle y mène un train de vie luxueux. À l image de son époux qui présidait la Société des Amis de l'Art, la princesse fut une grande mécène. Parses multiples achats dans les Salons, elle encouragea de nombreux peintres et artisans d art en favorisant ainsi leur production artistique. Dans son château de Rosny, construit au XVIème siècle pour le duc de Sully, surintendant des finances d Henri IV, acquis en 1818 et remanié sur ordre de la duchesse de Berry, elle réunit une des plus exceptionnelles bibliothèques de son temps, tant par la rareté des éditions que par la grande qualité des reliures, le plus souvent dues au célèbre relieur René Simier. Ce magnifique ensemble de plus de 8 000 volumes sera dispersé en 1837 lors d'une vacation de plus d'un mois (20 février - 23 mars).
