Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. Oblong small quarto measuring 10" x 7". Brown leather over stiff paper boards with "Photographs" stamped in gilt on the front board. Contains 122 sepia toned or black and white gelatin silver photographs and platinum prints measuring between 1" x 1" and 5" x 7" with some captions. Very good album with rubbing on the boards and edgewear with near fine photographs. A photo album kept by Gilbert Cope of the Westtown School in Westchester, Pennsylvania between 1887 and 1907. The school was started in 1799 by the Quakers as a coeducational collegiate prep school day and boarding school. The site was chosen because it was a day's journey from Philadelphia and was thought to be able to provide a "guarded education in a healthy environment away from the secular influences of the city." Boys were taught "useful skills" such as woodshop, surveying, and bookkeeping while girls were taught more domestic skills such as sewing. It was soon decided that both gender should learn academics including reading, penmanship, grammar, mathematics, geography, and science. These photos show classes, the grounds, and classrooms of the school. There are well-composed photographs of fields with grazing cows, orchards, and the wooded area surrounding the school. There are photos of the boy's football games and the basketball team's group photo. The girl's physical education classes are also seen here with a photo of a basketball game in the gym. Girls at the school are seen studying outside, lounging in fields, and posed on rocks in a stream. Members of the school are also seen playing in the snow and on large sleds with a teacher at the helm. They also enjoyed ice skating and hiking in the area. Later in the album there's a group photo of the girl's tennis team and a group of students boating. Some of the photos show dorm rooms and common rooms that were part of the school, most of which are covered in Westtown School pennants. Gilbert Cope was a student at the school and with an avid interest in genealogy, he later helped found the Chester County Historical Society. An interesting collection of a turn of the century Pennsylvania Quaker school.
