Leather. Zustand: Near Fine. None (illustrator). A beautifully bound compilation of the poetical works of English poet and hymn writer, William Cowper. This work is beautifully presented, in full tree calf binding with gilt detailing to the edges and to the spine and attractive marbled endpapers. This work is comprised of poetry of William Cowper, edited by H. S. Milford. Cowper's poetry was originally published in different forms during the late 18th Century. These previous forms are included to the front of the work. This particular edition was published thirty-five years after the last compilation of Cowper's work, and it includes many new poems which had since appeared in various books. William Cowper was one of the most popular poets of his time, being a leader of the romantic poetry era, known for his themes of nature and every day country living. Samuel Taylor Coleridge and William Wordsworth were both admirers of Cowper's work, with Coleridge labelling him "the best modern poet" at the time. Cowper was institutionalised for insanity in the 1770's, believing he was doomed to eternal damnation, but sought refuge in evangelical Christianity. Following this, he wrote many religious poems, including 'Walking with God, 'O Lord, I will praise thee' and 'Welcome to the Table', all of which are included in this work. With a frontispiece of William Cowper painted by English portrait artist, George Romney. Romney was one of the most fashionable artists of his day, painting many figures of high society, including his muse, Emma Hamilton, the mistress of Lord Nelson. In full tree calf binding with gilt detailing. Externally, excellent, with light rubbing to the hinges and slight rubbing to the spine and spine label. Slight offsetting to endpapers. Internally, firmly bound. Pages bright and clean. Near Fine. book.
