London, John Murray, 1821. 18,8 x 11,8 cm, vi-298 pp. et 310 pp. Deux volumes reliés pleine basane verte gaufrée, dos lisse orné, pièces de titre de cuir rouge, tanches jaspées, plats avec un encadrement de roulette dorée. Reliure légèrement usée, coins émoussés, un trou de vers en bas du dos du tome I, sinon bel exemplaire dans une reliure signée J. Tate relieur à Belfast au début du XIXème siècle. Tate était manifestement talentueux, surtout pour un jeune artisan "provincial" du XIXe siècle ; néanmoins, nous ne pouvons trouver aucune information en dehors d'une brève entrée dans l'ouvrage de Ramsden intitulé "Bookbinders of the United Kingdom (Outside London) 1780-1840" (p. 247) qui ne fait référence qu'aux annuaires de Belfast de 1831, 1835 et 1842. L'étiquette de Tate dans nos reliures indiquent l'adresse "13 High Street", ce qui date les reliures de 1835. Apparemment on ne connaît que fort peu de reliures de Tate. Provenance : le relieur August Kluche (tampon monogramme sur une page de garde). Apparue entre les années 1820 et 1830 la gaufrure est un procédé spécifique utilisé par les relieurs de l époque. Ceux-ci cherchaient en effet à agrémenter les plats de leur reliures sans pour autant orner ceux-ci de plaques comme celles de la fin du XVIIIème siècle ou de petits fers, qui étaient forts complexes et revenaient finalement chers aux bibliophiles. Aussi, pour des livres de qualité intermédiaire, une nouvelle tendance fît son apparition : la gaufrure. On considère généralement que c est Courteval qui eût le premier l idée de d appliquer simultanément sur les deux plats des plaques de bois ou métal crénelées en sens inverse. Pour que le procédé soit efficace il était nécessaire d exercer une très forte pression, le plus souvent au moyen d une presse ou d un balancier. On obtenait alors un décor à froid qui dans son exécution n était pas sans rappeler les reliures « estampées à froid » de la fin du Moyen Âge. Gaufrer, en fait, n est ni plus ni moins que graver profondément en relief des décors dont la complexité varie. Dans le cas de la gaufrure des années 1820-1830, l objectif recherché était d obtenir un résultat satisfaisant, rapidement et à un moindre coût.Néanmoins, cela restait un travail délicat qui même s il ne nécessitait pas d or faisait des attributions du doreur. Celui-ci devait veiller à appliquer des plaques chauffées à la juste température, afin de ne pas brunir le cuir. Le succès fût au rendez-vous et après les premiers décors simples, reposant sur des lignes entrecroisées, d autres motifs furent également proposés aux amateurs. Finalement, le procédé faisant ses preuves, les ateliers en vinrent finalement à dorer la gaufrure, aboutissant à de magnifiques reliures dignes des plus belles réussites du 19ème siècle.Les trois relieurs emblématiques ayant employé la gaufrure sont Courteval, Thouvenin et dans une moindre mesure Bozérian. On croise finalement assez peu de ces reliures « intermédiaires », mais elles sont aisément reconnaissables et plutôt recherchées, entre autre par des relieurs comme August Kluche. Livres.
