Rare suite of appealing lithographs of landscapes from sketches taken during the British military campaign in Spain and Portugal, 100 copies only were printed and signed by Cumberland at the end of the list of plates. Only one other copy appears on auction records, offered by Francis Edwards in 1975. George Cumberland junior (fl. 1816-1849) was the son of the artist George Cumberland (1754-1848); he exhibited at the Royal Academy between 1816 and 1818. Like his father, he was a painter interested in experimental printmaking and was an intimate friend of William Blake (it was George junior who played a key role in introducing Blake to John Linnell). He followed Wellington's troops during the Peninsular War (1808-1814) and the drawings he made there were originally published c.1818 as a suite of 12 captioned etchings in an edition of just 30 copies. A few years later he clearly decided to try his hand at the relatively new medium of lithography, reworked his original etchings and added another seven subjects. It would appear that while in the peninsula he employed a camera lucida, another new invention, patented by William Hyde Wollaston in 1806 (see Hammond & Austin, p. 91, where Cumberland is mentioned). Of those views directly related to the war, plate II is a view looking toward Wellington's lines covering Lisbon from the abandoned French position at Santarém; plate IX shows Badajoz from across the Guadiana River, a placid image with workers in the fields - a far cry from the scene of what had been the bloodiest siege of the war; likewise a view of Vitoria, plate XVII, where "a most complete victory was obtained by allied forces under the Duke of Wellington" on 21 June 1813. British troops make an appearance in the final plate ("View of the River Douro at Toro"); plate XVIII, a market scene where a British officer can be seen refreshing himself with a glass; and plate XIV, showing the Palace of Ildefonso, located in the hills near Segovia, which has a group of officers exchanging pleasantries in the sun-drenched square. Of the 1818 edition of 30 copies an online institutional search locates three only: British Library, Brown University, and Biblioteca Nacional de Portugal. Those at Biblioteca Nacional de Espana, Biblioteca de Arte da Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian (Lisbon) and another for which no location is given, are of this edition of 100 copies. Bentley, Cumberland, p. 34; Bobins 1573; Duarte de Sousa 2, 201. John H. Hammond & Jill Austin, The Camera Lucida in Art and Science, 1987. Landscape quarto (268 x 361 mm). Twentieth century dark blue green morocco, decorative gilt spine, sides with gilt French fillet border with corner fleurons, gilt scrolling turn-ins, gilt edges; portion of original wrapper mounted as a title page. With 19 hand-coloured lithographic views, number 13 comprised of 2 plates forming a panorama, 3 pp. of letterpress description of the views signed by the author. Plates watermarked J. Whatman and although date not clearly discernible, apparently 1822-23. Touch of wear to corners, a few shallow indentations to front cover, else very good.

Leather. Zustand: Good. None (illustrator). A selection of rare eighteenth century comedies by three of the period's best known playwrights. Bound together in one volume. 'The West Indian A Comedy' Richard Cumberland, A New Edition, 1771 'The English Merchant, a Comedy' George Colman, The Second Edition, 1767 'The Widow'd Wife a Comedy' W Kenrick, A New Edition, 1768 'Man and Wife or the Shakespeare Jubilee' George Colman, 1770 'The Brothers a Comedy' Richard Cumberland, 1770 Richard Cumberland, the author of two of these plays, is best remembered for his sympathetic portrayal of marginal characters. 'The West Indian' is Cumberland's best known play. It depicts Belcour, a West Indian plantation owner travelling to Britain. The play was an immediate success and ran for 28 performances in its original run. 'The Brothers' was Cumberland's breakthrough work. The play featured a complex plot upon the backdrop of Cornwall. It was written two years before 'The West Indian'. In addition to his writing career, Cumberland was also a civil servant. During the American War of Independence he acted as a secret negotiator with Spain in an effort to secure a peace agreement between the two nations. George Colman (the elder) was an English dramatist and essayist. His son, often referred to as 'The Younger' was also a playwright. His magnum opus is considered to be 'The Jealous Wife', a comedy based on Tom Jones. This play brought him instant fame. He was known for adapting many of Shakespeare's plays and was also the acting manager of the Covent Garden theatre. William Kenrick was a novelist, playwright, translator and satirist. He spent a lot of his career libeling his fellow writers. He penned several works in imitation of Shakespeare such as 'Falstaff's Wedding', a comic sequel to Herny IV Part II. The work to this volume, 'The Widow'd Wife' followed and had a growing success. It ran for 14 nights and resumed the next season. The play premiered at Drury Lane Theatre on 5 December 1767 and closely resembled the plot of 'Memoirs of a Magdalen' by Hugh Kelly. In a full calf binding. Externally, sound with patches of heavy rubbing at the joints. Hinges and joints are starting but firm. Prior owner's inscriptions to the endpapers. Prior owner's bookplate to the front pastedown, John Carver. Internally, firmly bound. Pages 89 and 90 of 'The Widowed Wife' have been misnumbered 49 and 50. Final leaf to man and wife is chipped to the edges and has a closed tear to the gutter. Tidemarks to the page edges of 'Man and Wife' to the final twenty pages. Pages are generally bright with just the odd spots. Good. book.
