Buch Erstausgabe
Paris, Chez l'Auteur & Crochard, 1818, 4°, 126 pp., Portrait, 80 (53 Farb-) Kupfertafeln in Punktierstich, feiner Pappband d.Zt; feines Exemplar des Atlasbandes. First Edition - A Great Ophthalmological Atlas ! Antoine Pierre Demours (1762-1836) was Royal Ophthalmologist to Louis XVIII and Successor Charles X and one of the greatest ophthalmic surgeons of the 18th century. His Treatise on Eye Diseases is dedicated to Louis XVIIII. He introduced the mydriatric drugs into France. His operation to form a new pupil in the unfortunate Sauvage created great sensation, not only in France but all over Europe. The final atlas-volume "Contenant les planches qui représentent les Maladies des yeux, avec leurs explications, et la traduction de l'ouvrage de Samuel Thomas Soemmerring, intitulé : Icones oculi humani"; with frontispiece portrait of the authors father, Pierre Demours (1702-1795), (see biographical note vol.I, pp. XXVII - XXXIII), engraved by N.F.J. Masquelier after Latour's painting, dated 1792. It also contains the very fine colour-printed plates with accompanying text including the first translation of Samuel Soemmerring's anatomical atlas "Icones Oculi humani" (pp.9-101, pl. 1-13), which together with Zinn's monograph is the basis of all modern research on the structure of the eye. The 80 plates are numbered 1-65; each of the plates 1-13 has an additional outline plate with reference letters; two plates (9-10) are additionally available in two versions, one black/white (Mougeot sc.) and one in colours (Pome sc.); plates 13-65 (except pl.14 & 15 depicting instruments) are printed in colours by Londlois after the fine drawings by Laguiche. Several engravers were involved: Mougeot, Pomel, Lambert, Prud'hon, Sophie, Sixdeniers; Fanny Joyan, Mme Benois, and others. "This is not the first illustrated textbook on ophthalmology, but certainly a splendid example; remarkable not only for its time but even today." Hirschberg Garrison & Morton No.5842.1; Norman No. 618; Becker Col. No.96; Waller No.2353; BOA, p.51; Hirschberg III, Par. 374.

Paris, Chez l'Auteur & Crochard, 1818, 8°, XXXVI, 551, (1); (6), 518; (6), 517, (3) pp.; Atlas in 4°, 126 pp., Portrait, 80 (53 Farb-) Kupfertafeln in Punktierstich, 4 Halbledereinbände d.Zt. mit Rückenvergoldung; feines Expl. First Edition - A Great Ophthalmological Atlas ! "This four volume work, one of the most important and elaborate books on the diseases of the eye published to that period. The basis of this book are 2000 patient charts; the illustrations are based on sketches made in the presence of the patients. The first part is a description of ophthalmology, the second and third volumes contain several hundreds of carefully described cases histories obtained in the course of the author's twenty years of experience and from his father nearly fifty years of practice. It includes the first full description of glaucoma in which heightened intraocular pressure is recognized (1: 468-472; 3: 203-276). Credit for the observations on glaucoma belongs principally to his father, Pierre Dmours, who was the superior clinical investigator, though it is quite properly shared with his son who excelled as a surgeon.
