12mo in sixes, pp. 117, [1] blank, [2] advertisements; a fine copy, uncut in the original boards (spine rather worn, original printed label chipped). First and only edition. The author is identified on the title page as being 'John [corrected to James] Dewar student of Logic'. This is in the same hand as an ownership inscription on the endpaper reading 'Robert Abercromby Johnstone Glasgow April 1828', so it seems fair to guess that Johnstone knew, or at least knew of, the author personally. The book is dedicated to Thomas Campbell, the poet, who had been elected Rector of the University in 1826; but one can assume that he would not have been overly impressed with this immensely long poem of 309 eight-line stanzas, with notes at the end. Copac locates copies at the BL, NLS and Glasgow (whose online catalogue fails to identify the author). WorldCat adds the Bodleian and Stanford. Not in Jackson, Annals of English Verse.

He and Kamerlingh Onnes engaged in a long and heated competition (eventually won by Kamerlingh Onnes) over who would be the first to liquefy helium; however, Dewar's interest was not so much in the liquefaction of gases per se, but in the properties of matter at temperatures approaching absolute zero.
