The Second Edition, Revised, Enlarged, and Adapted to Professional as well as General Use. Boston: Little, Brown & Co., 1856. xxiv, 545 pp. Reprinted 2000 by The Lawbook Exchange, Ltd. ISBN-13: 9781584770206; ISBN-10: 1584770201. Hardcover. New. $95. * Duer [1780-1858], a judge of the New York Supreme Court who served as president of Columbia College from 1829 until his retirement in 1842, presented this course of lectures to seniors at Columbia after his retirement. Originally written as The Outlines of the Constitutional Jurisprudence of the United States and proposed as a textbook to prominent universities, the work gained the attention of James Madison and John Marshall, among others. The work was published under the title Lectures on Constitutional Jurisprudence in 1843, and revised in 1856, this the final authorial edition. "Herein Duer still finds ultimate sovereignty in the people. His statement is that if the people of the United States had never before acquired a common character, they assumed it when they ratified the Constitution in conventions." See Bauer, Commentaries on the Constitution 227, Dictionary of American Biography III:488.

Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. First edition. Spine ends worn, hairline split at the front joint, scattered foxing, still an attractive, about very good copy. Stirling was a Major General who commanded troops in New Jersey and New York during the Revolutionary War, and was one of the founders, and the first Governor of Columbia College. Inscribed by the author: "Stephen Van Rensselaer Esq. From his friend the Author." The recipient was Stephen Van Rensselaer IV, one of the largest landowners in New York state and the son of Stephen Van Rensselaer III, a Major General in the War of 1812. Duer was a New York Supreme Court Judge, and also served as President of Columbia. A nice association between two notables of the period.

Most of the mounted illustrations are portraits of American Revolutionary figures, or of New Yorkers. Included are many views of New York architecture, a map of Revolutionary New York & environs in 1778 and a few views of Dutch New York. William Duer was a prominent lawyer who later became judge, as well as president of Columbia College. Bound in are two letters from Morgan Dix, rector of Trinity Church. A newspaper article is affixed to a blank page. William Loring Andrews published books distinctive for their taste in type, illustrations & binding, usually in very limited editions, which were widely collected.
