Two volumes, 8vo, pp. xiv, [ii], 310; vi, [ii] blank and errata, *1-*16, 5-264, 263-328; a fine copy, uncut and occasionally unopened; in original blue paper boards, new paper spines. First edition. John Hughes was a minor figure in early 18th century English letters, but enjoyed the friendship and esteem of greater writers. His tragedy, The Siege of Damascus (1720) was very popular, but he had the misfortune to die on the opening night and never enjoyed its success. The correspondence here is largely his in the first volume, but the second volume includes many letters by such as Pope and Swift, most of them printed here for the first time. The link between all of these papers is William Duncombe (1690-1769), who had married Hughes's sister Elizabeth, and who presumably inherited his papers; the collection is edited by his son John (d. 1786). It was reprinted, expanded into three volumes, the following year.

Erstausgabe
4to, pp. 12; bound with another contemporary poem, imperfect, as below; in new quarter calf. First edition. A well-known parody of Gray's Elegy, by John Duncombe (1729-86), clergyman and poet, and son-in-law of the artist Joseph Highmore: The Curfew tolls the hour of closing gates, With jarring sound the porter turns the key, Then in his dreary mansion slumbr'ing waits, And slowly, sternly quits it - tho' for me. The fact that Gray's poem could be parodied, with the expectation that many would be familiar with the original, only two years after its first publication in February 1751, is very suggestive of its enormous contemporary popularity. Duncombe's poem was perhaps the most successful of the early parodies, as it was printed with the Elegy itself in 1776. With this is bound a copy of Nature: an ethic epistle, inscribed to the Honourable Mrs D----y (London, Flexney, 1764), but without the title and following leaf (which carries an explanatory 'advertisement'). This poem is of the greatest rarity, being recorded in ESTC in two copies only, at the Huntington and Illinois. Although anonymous, it is clear that that the addressee is the author's mother, which means that she cannot be the bluestocking Mary Delany (who was neither a mother nor an Hon.), as one might have hoped.
