With two-hundred and forty black and white engravings with decorative borders, engraved reproductions from pictures in public In five volumes complete. Encompassing numerous illustrious and historical figures from Henry VIII, Lady Jane Grey, Cardinal Pole and many of their contemporaries to Oliver Cromwell, Francis Bacon and culminating in more recent times with Charles James Foz and Arthur Wellesley, Duke of Wellington. Sir Edmund Lodge, KH (1756 - 1839), herald, was a long-serving English officer of arms, a writer on heraldic subjects, and a painstaking supplier of short, accurate biographies. Lodge wrote Illustrations of British History, Biography, and Manners in the Reigns of Henry VIII, Edward VI, Mary, Elizabeth and James I. He also wrote Life of Sir Julius Caesar. His most important work on heraldry was The Genealogy of the Existing British Peerage. Lodge contributed the literary matter to Portraits of Illustrious Personages of Great Britain. With previous owner;s ink inscriptions dated 1869 to front free endpapers and front blanks of all volumes. In a half calf binding with cloth covered boards. Externally, sound but with slight wear to extremities with some rubbing and ink marks to some boards and staining to boards of volume one. Internally, firmly bound but with a few pages detached to volume three. Bright but with slight scattered foxing in particular to plates, handling marks and with occasional tidemarks and stain to pages. With the occasional slight closed tear. Very Good. book.

Generally bright but with slight age toning to some pages and with the odd spot, mark and tidemarks to some pages, predominantly plates. With previous owner's initialled ink stamp to recto to rear free endpapers. Very Good. book.
