Verlag: London: printed by E. Cave at St. John's Gate for the benefit of the Poets and sold by the booksellers in town and country, 1735
Anbieter: Christopher Edwards ABA ILAB, Henley-on-Thames, OXON, Vereinigtes Königreich
8vo, pp. [393]-448; some brown stains in the lowers margins throughout; somewhat dog-eared, other-wise in good condition; uncut in the original blue printed wrappers (spine worn, small piece torn from the lower corner of the back wrapper, affecting a few words on either side). An extraordinary survival in printed wrappers: a special number of the Gentleman's Magazine, containing seventeen poems submitted for what must have been the first series of open poetry competitions in Britain. The poems submitted for the competition are all unsigned, but on the verso of the title is a poem entitled, On the Dignity of Divine Poetry, addressed to the Rev. Dr. Broome by John Hulse, of Hulm's Chapel in Cheshire, with a note: 'The ingenious clergyman, who contributes this suitable introduction to the following poems, is not a competitor for any of the prizes'. As Cave's biographer in ODNB says: 'Valuable publicity (and copy) for the columns was achieved by poetry competitions, eight in all, throughout the 1730s, and better magazine contributors were often engaged as editorial assistants as a result. The uneven quality of this verse often exposed the magazine to censure from those indifferent to the realities of running a contributory mass circulation miscellany'. It is not known at what date Cave began to issue his ground-breaking magazine in printed wrappers. The first bibliographical study of the early years of the Gentleman's Magazine was undertaken by William B. Todd, and published in Vol. 18 (1965) of Studies in Bibliography. In the course of his research, which concentrated on the years 1731-1754, Todd visited a great many libraries, and examined some 175 sets of the magazine, both partial and complete. Todd was well aware that from a very early date numbers were issued in printed wrappers, but details proved extremely elusive: 'The only copy I have seen in wrappers is the number for June 1752 at the Boston Public Library'. The front wrapper of this number, some eight years earlier than that, bears Cave's familiar woodcut device of St. John's Gate but not the same block as was used for the title page. Below is a list of the four prizes available: (a) the sum of £50, 'offer'd by a gentleman', for the best poem; (b) the sum of £50, 'offer'd by a gentlewoman', for 'the second in merit'; (c) a third prize of a five-year run of the magazine, 'large paper'; (d) a fourth prize of a similar run, 'small paper'. The inside wrappers and the back wrapper contain detailed descriptions of other Cave publications, and an advertisement of 'chrystalline shivery salt'.

Leather. Zustand: Good. None (illustrator). A well preserved copy of 'The Gentleman's Magazine', being volume LXIII from the year 1793. This publication was the first to use the work 'magazine' for a periodical and was Samuel Johnson's first regular employer. This is part one of this periodical for 1793. It therefore holds some very important contemporary accounts of French politics. There are minutes from the proceedings of the National Convention which resulted in Louis XVI of France being Guillotined. There are several sections discussing the political proceedings on the continent This wide-ranging periodical also contains; a theatrical register; topographical descriptions of Honiton; reviews of new publications such as Gibbon's 'History' (vol IV) and the 'Language of Botany'; Gronow Owen's Poetry; Horace's poetry, Meteorological diaries; and helpful articles on gardening turnips. Illustrated, with twenty three plates total. The 'Gentleman's Magazine' was edited by Sylvanus Urban, a pseudonym for Edward Cave. The work was so popular it ran interrupted for almost 200 years. Prior to this periodical there market was lacking a wide-ranging publication with numerous topics discussed. Edward Cave coined the term magazine and his astute business sense lead to the popularity and longstanding nature of this periodical. Bookplate to the front pastedown of Christopher Hogwood. Hogwood was an English conductor, and harpsichordist. He founded the 'Academy of Ancient Music' and was a leading authority on historically informed performance. This work is a useful tool in understanding society in the eighteenth century. It is a lovely example of a late eighteenth century periodical and therefore a fascinating read. In a half calf binding. Externally, rubbed to the spine and boards. Paper covered boards have faded. Small amount of loss to the head of spine. Joints are cracked. Hinges are strained but firm. Small worm holes to the front board. Bookplate to the front pastedown, 'Christopher Hogwood'. Internally, generally firmly bound. Pages are bright with just some minor offsetting to the corners of the title page. Good. book.
