Ripley joined the 9th Vermont Infantry while still in college and as a general led the Union forces into Richmond as the Confederate capital fell on April 3, 1865. His account of this and of events in the preceding three years are preserved in a series of nearly 500 leters to and from his parents, teo brothers, andfour sisters.
