Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - Essay from the year 2012 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Culture and Applied Geography, grade: 1,0, University of Tubingen, language: English, abstract: For all this apparent ubiquity, the term 'cultural studies' remains an unusually 'polysemic' sign. The academic field of 'Cultural Studies' has experienced a major worldwide growth in the last 25 years of the 20th century. Everyone uses and discusses the abstract noun 'culture', but its exact meaning varies to such an extent, that it seems necessary to examine the different notions of culture: As a matter of fact, 'culture' is one of the most complex words of the English language; only 'nature' denotes more meanings. One can say that there is hardly anything that is not culture. 8 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Darin rebelliert sie gegen die Diskriminierung und Unterdrückung der Frau und '[.] questions such subjects as [.] sexuality, and the institutions of marriage, justice and honor'.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - Seminar paper from the year 2012 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 1,0, University of Tubingen, language: English, abstract: 'König Artus lebt!' As the title of Stefan Zimmer's book illustrates, the fame of the English myth around King Arthur and his deeds seem to be as alive today as when his first reports appeared. The vast literary canon connected to the Arthurian legend alone proves its omnipresence and importance. Arthur's merits are primarily known thanks to Geoffrey of Monmouth (~1100-1155), one of 'the Fathers of Arthurian literature', who published his Latin best-seller Historia Regum Britanniae, the History of the Kings of Britain, in the Anglo-Norman period, between 1136 and 1138. Another major milestone in connection with Arthur is 'the discovery of Arthur's remains at Glastonbury Abbey, in 1191.' Those twelfth century events contributed to Arthur's popularity and had '[.] such an impact on contemporary minds that Arthur acquired a reality and a dimension that he had never had before'.This paper focuses on Geoffrey of Monmouth's literary legacy. Little is certain about Geoffrey of Monmouth's life and even the scarce details that exist are not necessarily reliable. He probably originated from Monmouth and thus paid homage to his birthplace through his name. Geoffrey's exact date of birth is unknown, but some sources suggest that he died in 1155. Interestingly, he used his father's name, Arthur, at the beginning of his career . Therefore, his alias already showed a link to the legend of the famous warrior king, he later on wrote about. Geoffrey was ordained bishop in Saint Asaph and Lambeth and taught as magister at Oxford . Moreover, Geoffrey was said to be part British, because he paints a positive image of the Bretons in his Historia. His literary career was based on three major works: The Prophecies of Merlin, The History of the Kings of Britain, and The Life of Merlin, which he later on incorporated in his Historia. Whether Geoffrey wrote parts of the Book of Llandaff is still an ongoing debate . By all means, the Historia's reputation made it known as one of the most important books of the Middle Ages.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - Master's Thesis from the year 2014 in the subject Didactics for the subject English - Literature, Works, grade: 1,0, University of Tubingen (Englisches Seminar), language: English, abstract: The South Asian country of India immediately evokes an array of preconceptions in the Western mind: be it the land of Mahatma Gandhi and Rabindranath Tagore, of extreme poverty and extreme wealth, of colours, fragrances and spices, of the holy cow and its connected cultural and spiritual richness, or of Bollywood. Nowadays, however, the media focuses more and more on one issue: India's ill treatment of women. This master's thesis by the title of 'Struggling to Find a Voice' will be composed of two major pillars: women's position in Hindu tradition and the study of two novels of Shashi Deshpande. The first part will focus on the changing role of Hindu women throughout Indian history, from its beginnings in the Vedic times until today. The paper intends to address the most important stages in what could be called a rollercoaster of prohibitions, submission and rights: from a quasi-equal position in ancient India, to a slave-like existence in the Middle Ages, a dawn of hope during the British Raj and the post-Independence period, up until recent events and struggles. As Deshpande's protagonists, Saru and Jaya, both belong to the Hindu middle-class, the historical overview will concentrate first and foremost on Hindu women. The insights gained in the first part will then provide the backbone for the analysis of the novels to follow. The second part will be an in-depth analysis of Shashi Dehpande's novels The Dark Holds No Terrors (1980) and That Long Silence (1988). Both of the two novels' protagonists, Saru and Jaya, form part of the educated, Indian middle-class and are - because of their sex - caught between the traditional, orthodox image of a Hindu housewife and the modern, 'Western', concepts of emancipation and equality. The paper intends to examine how they struggle to come to terms with this fragmentation of their selves and how they find a balance between their traditional roles as a housewife and mother and their own 'modern' expectations. The relationship of being silent to oppressing one's own identity will be looked at more closely, as well as the factors which help them to raise their voices in the end. Finally, the conclusion will not only summarise the findings, but also link the first part of this Masterarbeit with the second part under the heading 'Struggling to Find a Voice'.
